NRI Life Insurance Miami: Questions to Settle First
By Nischay Rawal · Published October 14, 2026
NRI life insurance is life coverage for people with ties to India who need protection that works across borders. For a Miami household, the early questions are about residence, insurability, ownership, premiums, and tax.
If you’re weighing NRI life insurance Miami coverage, start with these questions. This page explains them in plain words. It is general information, not tax, legal, or investment advice. NR CPAs & Business Advisors is a Miami CPA firm. Insurance is offered through a licensed agent, separately from the accounting practice.
What NRI life insurance means for a Miami household
NRI stands for non-resident Indian. In everyday use, it means a person who lives outside India. On this page, we use the term to describe a coverage need. We don’t use it to describe a group of buyers with shared circumstances or preferences.
Florida residents can have the same need. A parent in India, a family property, or a business partner abroad can each be a reason to look at coverage. Whether a policy can be issued depends on the insurer’s rules for residence and citizenship, and on your facts. Those rules vary by insurer, so ask before you assume anything.

Life insurance types this practice handles
Term and whole life are the two main types we discuss. We also cover coverage for businesses and estates. Each type fits a different need, and the policy terms decide the details. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide explains how term and permanent coverage differ. It also lists questions to ask before buying.
Term life insurance covers a set period. Premium terms depend on the level-premium period stated in the specific policy and contract. Ask what happens when that period ends.
A whole life insurance policy may build cash value under the contract. Cash value includes guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts. Loans or withdrawals can reduce both the cash value and the death benefit. Terms depend on the policy and the insurer. We describe whole life as life insurance, not as a savings or investment product.
Key person insurance covers the life of an owner or key employee. Buy-sell agreement insurance helps partners fund a buyout if an owner dies. Estate planning life insurance is one tool within a broader estate plan. Each fit depends on the business or estate facts.
Questions to settle before applying from Miami
For NRI life insurance Miami households, settle four things early: residence, health, ownership, and payments. Each one affects whether a policy can be issued and how it works later.
Residence comes first. Insurers set their own rules for applicants who live in the US, live abroad, or move between countries. Confirm those rules before you apply.
Health comes next. Health questions are required, and issue may depend on insurability. Coverage terms depend on the insurer’s underwriting.
Ownership and beneficiaries are different roles. The owner controls the policy. The insured is the person whose life is covered. The beneficiary receives the death benefit. Who holds each role affects payments and control.
Premium logistics matter too. The insurer and the policy set the currency, payment method, and billing timing. Florida law requires every insurance contract to allow a grace period of not less than 30 days for a premium after the first (Fla. Stat. § 627.453). Premium amounts depend on the insurer, the policy, underwriting, and your circumstances.
Coverage amount is a separate question. Some people start with a multiple of income as a rough rule of thumb. That is only a starting point. It does not show the amount any one household needs. The right amount depends on what you want to protect.
Tax and estate questions to raise with your agent
Tax treatment depends on the policy, the owner, and your facts. Treat the points below as questions to raise, not answers.
Federal law generally excludes life insurance death benefits from gross income, but exceptions apply (IRC section 101). Interest paid on proceeds is handled separately. Ask how these rules apply to your policy.
Estate inclusion depends on ownership. The gross estate can include insurance when the decedent held incidents of ownership at death (IRC section 2042). Who owns the policy can change the result, so review ownership with your agent.
For a business owner, premium deductibility is a separate question. IRC section 264 denies a deduction for life insurance premiums when the taxpayer is directly or indirectly a beneficiary. Whether premiums are deductible depends on the policy, the business structure, and your situation.
Our firm brings a CPA view of tax and cash flow to these questions. The insurance itself is offered through a licensed agent, separately from the accounting practice.

How a coverage review with our team works
A coverage review is our first meeting. We use it to understand your family or business need before any policy is discussed.
We look at the need, your existing policies, the policy type you’re considering, and the questions above. For key person and buy-sell cases, we also check insurable interest rules. Florida law lets a business entity insure a key person when that person gives written consent before the insurance is bought (Fla. Stat. § 627.404). Parties to a buy-sell contract also have an insurable interest in each other’s lives for that contract.
Our team includes support staff who assist with office work. Nischay Rawal is the licensed agent who offers insurance.
Any recommendation depends on insurer underwriting and approval. We can’t promise a coverage outcome. A review helps you ask better questions, but the insurer makes its own decision.
Licensing, policy disclosures, and your review right
Insurance is offered through Nischay Rawal, a Florida-licensed insurance agent. States of licensure: Florida. Florida law bars anyone from acting as an insurance agent unless currently licensed and appointed (Fla. Stat. § 626.112).
Insurance is offered separately from the accounting practice of NR CPAs & Business Advisors. The CPA firm is not the insurer.
Florida law gives a 14-day right to review a life insurance policy and return it for a refund (Fla. Stat. 626.99(4)). Coverage, premiums, and benefits depend on the issuing insurer’s underwriting and the terms of the policy.
Dividends are not guaranteed. Cash value includes guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts. The Florida DFS life insurance guide explains cash value, policy loans, and the review period.
