Some policies also cover disability. What does key person insurance typically cover for a business? In short, it gives the company money to absorb the financial hit of losing someone it depends on.

This guide explains how the policy is set up, what the payout can pay for, and what the coverage does not do. It is written for owners, partners, and family members in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, and other Florida cities who are still deciding whether the coverage fits their business.

What key person insurance is and how the policy is structured

Key person insurance is life insurance a business buys on the life of an owner or employee it relies on. The Insurance Information Institute describes it as coverage that compensates a business for financial losses caused by the death or disability of a key employee.

Three roles appear in every policy. The business is the policy owner and pays the premiums. The key person is the insured, the one whose life is covered. The business is also the beneficiary, so it receives the death benefit if it had an insurable interest in the insured at the time the contract was made.

The policy is a contract with a named insurer. The policy form, the face amount (the amount payable at death), and the term are written into that contract. Two generic types are common. Term life insurance covers a set period. Whole life insurance is designed to last longer. Generic names describe a policy’s premium and benefit pattern. They are not promises of value.

For the full guide, see the key person insurance overview.

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

What the death benefit can cover for the business

Under the usual setup, the death benefit goes to the business, and the business decides how to use it. What does key person insurance typically cover for a business? Common uses include:

Replacing lost revenue while the company adjusts

Recruiting and training a replacement

Repaying business loans or lines of credit

Steadying cash flow while the business reorganizes

The face amount is set when the policy is bought. It is a fixed figure. It can be more or less than the real loss. Owners often test the amount against the company’s debts, payroll, and the revenue tied to that person before they buy. A fixed number is a starting point, not a measure of the loss.

Is disability coverage part of key person insurance?

Key person life insurance pays on death. Key person disability coverage is a separate product that some businesses consider when a key person cannot work because of illness or injury. The Insurance Information Institute notes that key person insurance may be life or disability coverage, so the label alone does not tell you what a policy pays.

Waiting periods, benefit limits, and the definition of disability differ from policy to policy. Read those terms in the policy itself before you compare options. Ask which problem the business is trying to solve: a death, a long illness, or both. Whether either coverage fits depends on the facts of your business.

Is key person insurance worth it for a business?

It can be worth weighing when one person’s work, client relationships, or know-how is hard to replace. A builder might depend on the owner who holds the lender and supplier relationships. A sales firm might depend on one top producer. Owners often ask three questions. How much revenue depends on that person? How much debt or ongoing obligation would the business need to cover? How long would it take to find, hire, and train a replacement?

Key person insurance covers one specific money gap. It does not take the place of succession planning, cross-training staff, or clear written roles. A policy can pay money to the business. It cannot run the company or produce a replacement overnight.

What is not a reason to buy key person life insurance?

Key person insurance is not a savings plan, an investment, or a retirement plan. Buying a policy to hold cash value, or to give an employee a reward, is not what this coverage is for.

Florida law sets an insurable interest rule. Under Fla. Stat. § 627.404, a business entity has an insurable interest in the life, body, and health of its owners, directors, officers, partners, managers, affiliates or subsidiaries, and key employees or key persons, if consent is obtained in writing from the key employees or persons before the insurance is purchased. The business must get written consent from that person before buying the insurance.

The business may not take adverse action against a key employee who refuses to consent. The insured, having legal capacity to contract, must also consent in writing to the contract and its terms, on or before entering into the contract, unless the policy is a prepaid funeral contract, group life insurance, or group or blanket accident, health, or disability insurance. The insurable interest does not need to last after coverage starts. These rules apply before the policy is bought, so the paperwork matters from the start.

A policy does not replace a buy-sell agreement when the real concern is who gets an ownership interest. Buy-sell agreement insurance is a separate tool built for that question.

How much does a key man policy cost?

Key man insurance is another name for the same coverage. Premium amounts depend on each insured person and each business, so they are worked out in a coverage review.

Insurers look at several factors. These include the insured’s age and health, the face amount, the policy type, and the length of the term. The business pays the premiums to keep the policy in force. Premium payment terms are written into the policy, so read them closely.

Owners should also ask how the premium fits their cash flow over many years, not only the first year. A payment that is easy to make in one year can strain a tight budget later.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

Tax and ownership points a CPA reviews

Federal tax results depend on who owns and pays for the policy.
