A level term policy usually ends when its term ends, unless the contract offers a conversion or renewal option. A whole life policy usually keeps going, and some become paid up. This guide explains those paths in plain words. It covers general mechanics, not what any one policy will do.

Why the answer depends on the type of policy

Your policy type is the first thing to check. A 20-year premium history can belong to a 20-year level term policy, a whole life policy, or a key person or buy-sell policy owned by a business. Each one works differently when the 20-year mark arrives. A premium history alone doesn’t settle the question.

Level term means the premium and face amount stay the same for a set period. Coverage lasts only during that period. Term life insurance is designed to cover a set number of years, while whole life and other permanent policies are designed to last for the insured’s lifetime and include a cash-value feature.

Whole life is permanent coverage. It is built to last for the insured’s life, as long as the policy stays in force on its terms.

The controlling documents are the policy contract, its schedule pages, and the insurer’s statements. They list the term length, conversion deadlines, and values. This guide explains the general mechanics. It can’t tell you how your specific policy will respond.

If a notice about a term ending has reached you, or a parent's whole life policy hit year 20, our team can walk through it with you in a coverage review. Premiums stop with it. A standard term policy builds no cash value, so there is nothing to collect at the end.

Find the expiry date in the schedule or the first pages of the contract. Many owners first learn the date from an insurer notice or a renewal letter. Put it on your calendar as soon as you find it.

Florida has notice rules for lapse. That rule covers nonpayment, not the normal end of a term. It also does not apply where premiums are payable monthly or more frequently and are regularly collected by a licensed agent or paid by credit card or preauthorized check processing or automatic debit service of a financial institution.

Conversion and renewal options on a term policy

Some term policies include a conversion privilege. This lets the owner move to a permanent policy, usually by a stated deadline. Conversion terms, deadlines, and premium levels vary by policy and insurer.

Other term policies allow annual renewal. Renewal can keep coverage in place past the stated term, but premiums may rise with age. Check the contract for renewability and any age-based premium change.

Federal tax law also matters when one policy is exchanged for another. 26 U.S.C. § 1035 provides that no gain or loss is recognized on the exchange of one life insurance contract for another, but, to the extent regulations provide, this does not apply to an exchange that transfers property to someone who is not a United States person. Compare the cost, coverage, and surrender terms of any replacement in writing before you decide.

Ask for each path in writing: the premium, the death benefit, and any cash value. Then compare them side by side. Keep copies of every notice and illustration you receive.

What a whole life policy can look like after 20 years of premiums

A whole life policy usually continues for the insured’s lifetime, as long as it stays in force. Some whole life policies are designed so premiums stop after a set number of years. Then the policy is paid up, and no more premiums are due. Whether yours is paid up depends on its design.

Cash value and loan values appear in the contract and the annual statement. Read guaranteed and non-guaranteed values separately. Non-guaranteed values can change over time. Dividends, where a policy pays them, are not guaranteed.

Policy loans follow Florida rules. After a policy has a cash surrender value and no premium is in default, Fla. Stat. § 627.458 lets the insurer advance a loan on the policy. Fla. Stat. § 627.458 reads: “The loan value of the policy shall be at least equal to the cash surrender value at the end of the then-current policy year, except that the insurer may deduct, either from such loan value or from the proceeds of the loan, any existing indebtedness not already deducted in determining such cash surrender value, including any interest then accrued but not due, any unpaid balance of the premium for the current policy year, and interest on the loan to the end of the current policy year.” Under Fla. Stat. § 627.458(2), a policy may also provide that, if total indebtedness, including interest due or accrued, reaches or exceeds the loan value, the policy will terminate and become void, but not until at least 30 days’ notice has been mailed by the insurer to the last known address of the insured or policyowner and of any assignee of record. That happens only after at least 30 days’ notice is mailed. The loan section does not apply to term policies or to term insurance benefits provided by riders or supplemental policy provisions.

Surrender is a bigger step. When an agent recommends surrendering a policy with cash value and does not recommend buying another policy, Fla. Stat. § 627.4553 requires written information first. That includes the estimated surrender charge, lost guarantees, possible tax consequences, and any forfeited death benefit.

Coverage needs after the 20-year mark

Coverage needs change over time. Income protection may matter less when children are independent or debts are paid. It may matter more if a spouse depends on that income. The question is whether the policy still fits today’s needs.

Estate planning policies need extra attention. 26 U.S.C. § 2042 includes insurance proceeds receivable by other beneficiaries in the gross estate when the decedent held any incident of ownership at death. Check ownership and beneficiary designations against the estate plan.

Business policies work differently. Under 26 U.S.C. § 264, premiums on a life insurance policy are not deductible when the taxpayer is directly or indirectly a beneficiary.

A business’s ownership or agreements may have changed since the policy began. That can affect whether the coverage still matches the business’s needs.

Questions to answer from the policy documents

Start with the basics. Find the policy type, issue date, term length, and stated end date. Note any conversion deadline.

Check how premiums work. Identify whether premiums stay level, step up, or stop after a set number of years.

Find the guaranteed and non-guaranteed values in the illustration or annual statement. Compare them line by line.

Confirm who owns the policy, who is insured, and who the beneficiaries are. For a life insurance policy issued on or after October 1, 1997, Florida law lets the policyowner name a secondary addressee in writing, at application or at any time the policy is in force. For an insured 64 or older whose policy has been in force at least one year, that person also receives the lapse notice, unless premiums are payable monthly or more frequently and are regularly collected by a licensed agent or paid by credit card or any preauthorized check processing or automatic debit service of a financial institution.

Know your grace period. Fla. Stat. § 627.453 requires every insurance contract to allow at least 30 days to pay a premium after the first.

Related topics include whether a policy can be bought without a medical exam, what can disqualify an applicant, and how to buy key person life insurance.

Quick answers

<details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Does a 20-year term policy end?

It generally ends when its term ends, unless the contract gives a conversion or renewal option.
</details><details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Does whole life end after 20 years?

It usually continues for life while in force.
