How long that takes varies from claim to claim, and the paperwork you send in plays a large role. This guide walks through each step in plain words. It also shows how key-person, buy-sell, trust-owned, and NRI policies can change who files and who receives the money.

What “pay out” means for a life insurance policy

A payout is the insurer sending the death benefit to the beneficiary the policy names. The death benefit is the amount the insurer agrees to pay under the policy’s terms when the insured person dies.

Payment isn’t automatic. Someone must file a claim, and the insurer must review it before it pays.

Term life insurance and whole life insurance both pay a death benefit. The steps are similar, but ownership and paperwork can differ by policy. For an overview of policy types, read our key-person life insurance guide.

A policy that has been in force for many years still pays its death benefit under its terms. Its age matters only for the rules covered later in this guide.

If you're handling a policy after a loss, our team can review the papers with you in a coverage review led by our licensed agent.
