For many adults, yes. Going without a policy is a legal, personal choice. Whether it fits your life turns on your own circumstances. This guide explains when coverage usually matters most, how term and whole life differ, and what cancelling a policy can mean. NR CPAs & Business Advisors is a Miami CPA firm. It helps families, professionals and business owners across the United States, including Indian-American households, look at life insurance with a CPA’s view of tax and cash flow.

The short answer: it is a personal decision

Not having life insurance is a legal and common personal choice. Whether it’s right for you depends on the facts of your life, and the answer can change over time.

Life insurance is a contract. The insurer agrees to pay a death benefit to the people you name as beneficiaries when the insured person dies.

Your answer may shift as your income, family and business arrangements change. A choice that fit when you were single may not fit after a marriage, a child or a business partnership. Many people revisit the question at big moments, like buying a home or forming a company.

Ask yourself a few plain questions. Does anyone rely on your paycheck? Would someone else have to pay your debts? Does a business you own depend on you? How long are these facts likely to last? Write down the answers. They tell you more than a rule of thumb does.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

Situations where a policy may matter less today

Some people reasonably decide they don’t need coverage right now. Common examples include having no one who relies on your income, no dependents, few or no debts, and savings set aside for final expenses.

Treat these as questions, not rules. Being in one of these situations doesn’t end the discussion. People in them may still choose coverage for a future spouse or child, a business partner or an estate plan.

Be careful with the idea that savings are enough. Only your own numbers can show whether savings would cover what your household would face. Take each reason you have for skipping coverage and ask what it would mean for the people you care about.

Circumstances can change quickly. A health change or a new business partner can alter the picture, so revisit the question after major life events.

Who often has the most to plan for

Is it okay to not have life insurance when others rely on you? Usually that is where coverage matters most. A death benefit can help a spouse or children keep up household income. It can also help with a mortgage, a co-signed loan or other shared debt.

Business owners face a second set of questions. Key person insurance covers a business when one person’s skills or role are central to its income. Buy-sell agreement insurance can help fund an ownership transfer when an owner dies.

Florida law sets rules on who can insure whom. A business entity has an insurable interest in the life, body, and health of its owners, directors, officers, partners, and managers, and of key employees or key persons of the entity or of its affiliate or subsidiary, if consent is obtained in writing from the key employees or key persons before the insurance is purchased; the entity or its affiliate or subsidiary may not retaliate or take adverse action against any key employee or key person who does not consent to the issuance of insurance on his or her life, and a key employee or key person is an individual whose position or compensation is described in IRC § 101(j)(2)(A)(ii) (Fla. Stat. § 627.404).

Need is usually set by your real obligations, not a rule of thumb. Start with what your family or business would owe, then match coverage to that.

Term versus whole life, in plain words

Term life insurance covers you for a set number of years. Whole life insurance is designed to last for your whole life, as long as premiums are paid.

Term generally has no cash value. Whole life usually costs more and includes a cash value part. A PMC article on life insurance ownership notes that whole life may cost more than term, has limited liquidity and can carry penalties for withdrawing cash.

Whole life policies may include dividends, which are not guaranteed. Under Florida’s life insurance disclosure statute, any mention of policy dividends must be accompanied by a statement that they are not guaranteed. Guaranteed and non-guaranteed values should always be shown apart.

A whole life insurance policy is a life insurance contract. It is not an investment, savings plan or retirement plan.

Ask how long you need coverage, what the premium would be, and whether the premium can change. Those answers guide the choice more than product features do.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. A whole life policy may have a surrender value, which can be less than the premiums you paid. Before you cancel, get the numbers in writing and weigh them against the coverage you would give up.

Florida has rules for agents who recommend surrendering a policy with cash value. If an insurance agent, or a person performing insurance agent activities under an exemption from licensure, recommends surrendering an annuity or life insurance policy containing a cash value, and does not recommend using the proceeds to fund or purchase another annuity or life insurance policy, the agent must give written information first (Fla. Stat. § 627.4553). That information must include, but is not limited to, the estimated surrender charge, the loss of any minimum interest rate guarantees, possible tax consequences, any forfeited death benefit, and any other investment performance guarantees forfeited as a result of the transaction.

Policy loans follow their own rules. Florida’s policy loan section does not apply to term policies or to term benefits provided by riders (Fla. Stat. § 627.458).

Death benefits are generally excluded from the beneficiary’s gross income when paid because of the insured’s death (26 U.S.C. § 101). Surrenders and loans can have different tax results. Those results turn on the policy’s history and your situation.

Cross-border and business situations, and a next step

Cross-border families and business owners often face extra questions. Each situation changes which facts matter most.

If a beneficiary lives abroad, review that designation against sanctions rules. The OFAC FAQs on foreign beneficiaries describe how those rules work.

For a business, ask who would be affected if a partner or key person died. Those answers shape key person and buy-sell coverage. Keep records of who you name and why, and review them when your family or business changes.

Insurance is offered by Nischay Rawal, a licensed insurance agent, separately from the accounting practice of NR CPAs & Business Advisors.

Frequently asked questions
<details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Is it okay to not have life insurance?

Yes, for many people it is a legal, personal choice.
