Term pays a death benefit only if the insured dies during the policy term.

That one feature shapes everything else. FINRA explains that term life insurance covers the insured for a limited period, while whole or permanent life insurance provides lifetime coverage and includes a cash-value feature.

If the policy ends and the insured is still alive, there is no death benefit and no cash to collect. That is the key gap between term and whole life.

The right answer depends on the facts of each household or business. The most common reasons are simple and tied to time.

Replacing income. A working parent or spouse may want a death benefit to replace paycheck income for the years a family still depends on it. The coverage can match the number of working years left.

Covering debts. A mortgage, car loan, or other debt may pass to family if the borrower dies. A term policy can help cover that balance during the years it remains owed.

Funding education. Parents sometimes want money set aside for children’s school costs while the children are dependent. The policy length can follow the school years.

Covering a temporary business need. A business may owe a loan or depend on one person during a specific period. Term coverage can match that window.

The best test is simple. Match the policy length to the length of the financial need. When the need ends, the coverage may no longer be needed.

Reasons that do not match term coverage

Some goals call for a different product. Term is a poor fit for these expectations.

Building savings. A term policy does not build cash value that you can draw on during life. If savings is the goal, term will not supply it.

Lifelong coverage without renewal. Level term lasts for its level period, then renewal rules apply. A policy that expires leaves no coverage unless it was converted or renewed under its terms.

Investment returns. A term policy is not an investment, a savings plan, or a source of returns. Treating it as one creates a gap that surfaces at the worst time.

These expectations create gaps for one reason. Coverage ends when the term ends, and no cash value remains to fall back on. Whole life insurance is built for a different goal, which is why the two products are compared so often.

What term life insurance does and does not do

Term is designed for protection over a defined period. Its cost and structure follow from that design.

Level premiums. Many level term policies keep the same premium for the level period. After that period, renewal premiums are usually based on age and may be higher. Read the actual policy to see the renewal terms.

Conversion. Some convertible term policies allow a switch to permanent coverage without new health underwriting. The conversion terms and deadlines are set by the policy, so check them early.

Limits and exclusions. Term policies have limitations and exclusions. Health questions are part of the application, and issue may depend on insurability. The policy’s grace period, contestability period, and age-misstatement terms also matter.

Florida law sets some of these provisions. For example, Fla. Stat. § 627.455 makes a policy incontestable after 2 years from its date of issue, with exceptions such as nonpayment of premiums. Fla. Compare them side by side before you choose.

Term. Term provides a death benefit for a set period. For the same face amount, the starting cost is often lower. It has no cash value.

Whole life. Whole life provides permanent coverage with a cash-value feature. Premiums are generally set to stay level. Guaranteed values and non-guaranteed values should be shown separately. Non-guaranteed items, such as dividends where a policy pays them, are not guaranteed.

FINRA notes that comparing term and non-term coverage involves surrender charges, cash value, and policy replacement considerations. Ask about each of these before you change or replace a policy.

Cash flow matters too. A CPA’s view looks at what premiums do to monthly budgets over many years. It also looks at how a death benefit may be taxed. Amounts paid because of the insured’s death are generally not gross income, but interest paid on proceeds held under an agreement to pay interest is included in gross income. The choice remains yours.

Business owners: key person and buy-sell coverage

For business owners, term often funds a specific, time-limited need. Two common uses are key person and buy-sell coverage.

The coverage supports the business during a defined period of need.

Buy-sell agreement insurance. Term coverage may fund a purchase obligation during a set period. The buy-sell agreement and the policy should be reviewed together.

Florida rules apply here. Fla. Stat. § 627.404 allows a business entity to insure certain owners, officers, or key persons if written consent is obtained before the insurance is bought. The business may not retaliate or take other adverse action against a key person who refuses consent.

Estate tax can also be affected by who owns a policy. Under 26 U.S.C. § 2042, insurance is included in the gross estate to the extent of the amount receivable by the executor, and, for insurance payable to other beneficiaries, to the extent of the amount receivable by those beneficiaries when the decedent possessed any incidents of ownership at death, alone or together with another person. IRC § 2042 reads: “For purposes of the preceding sentence, the term “incident of ownership” includes a reversionary interest (whether arising by the express terms of the policy or other instrument or by operation of law) only if the value of such reversionary interest exceeded 5 percent of the value of the policy immediately before the death of the decedent.” Ownership should be reviewed with the estate plan.

Insurance is offered by our licensed agent, separately from the accounting practice.
