There is no single number. The monthly cost depends on how the insurer prices the applicant, the coverage amount, and the type of policy. This page explains those factors, how term and whole life differ at 60, and how to read published cost examples. It also covers the tax and cash flow questions that often come up. Our firm helps families and business owners across the United States, including readers in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville.

Why there is no single price for a 60-year-old man

A premium is set by the insurer’s underwriting, which is its review of the applicant’s risk. Two men of the same age can receive different quotes for the same coverage. Several factors shape the result:

Age at application. Premiums generally rise as the applicant gets older.

Sex. Men generally pay more than women of the same age for comparable coverage, because men as a group have shorter average life expectancy.

Health and medical history. Current conditions and past treatment feed into the insurer’s rating.

Tobacco use. Tobacco users generally pay higher rates.

Face amount. This is the death benefit the policy pays. A larger face amount costs more.

Policy type and term length. Term and permanent coverage are priced differently, and a longer term usually costs more.

The actual cost depends on the facts of the applicant and the policy the insurer issues.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

Term vs. whole life insurance at age 60

Term life insurance covers a set number of years. Whole life insurance is permanent coverage, and it can build cash value.

At 60, a term life insurance policy usually costs less per month than a whole life insurance policy with the same face amount. A longer term usually costs more than a shorter one. Whole life premiums are generally higher than comparable term coverage at the same age.

The right type depends on the purpose. Common purposes at this age include income for a spouse, funding a business obligation, and providing cash for estate costs. The time horizon also matters. Ask how long the need will last.

Is it worth having life insurance after 60? It can make sense when a real need continues past that age. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide explains term versus permanent coverage and how to compare policies and costs.

How published monthly cost examples are built and how to read them

A published monthly figure is an example built on stated assumptions. It is not a quote for you. Check the age, sex, health class, term, and face amount behind any example.

Also check the source, the year, and the sample it reflects. A survey can say what it measured and still miss your health, your state, or your insurer’s pricing. Florida law requires buyer information to help people evaluate the relative costs of similar plans, as described in Fla. A personal figure comes only from an application and the insurer’s underwriting.
</details>

Health questions, underwriting and age limits

A fully underwritten policy asks health questions, and issue may depend on insurability. Underwriting is the step where the insurer decides whether and on what terms to issue the policy.

A guaranteed-issue policy asks fewer questions, but it may pay limited or graded benefits in its early years. Read those benefit terms before you decide.

Is 67 too old to get life insurance?

Many insurers set maximum issue ages, so the answer depends on the insurer and the policy. Insurers may also set age limits for renewal or conversion. Ask each insurer for its limits in writing. A licensed agent can explain them during a coverage review.

Two Florida rules also matter. It also allows the insurer to reserve the right to defer granting a loan, other than for payment of a premium to the insurer, for 6 months after application. The loan value must be at least the cash surrender value at the end of the current policy year, but the insurer may deduct existing policy debt, accrued interest, any unpaid premium for the current year, and interest on the loan to the end of the policy year. The policy may end if debt equals or exceeds the loan value, but only after at least 30 days’ notice.
