Riders and exclusions can add to or limit those parts. This guide explains each piece in plain words, so you know what to look for when you read a policy. For families, business owners and NRI households in Miami and across Florida, these parts matter for the budget as well as for protection.

What is included in term life insurance? A quick answer

A term life insurance policy includes a death benefit, a beneficiary, a premium, a term length, and renewal and conversion terms. The insurer pays the death benefit only if the insured dies while the policy is in force during that term.

FINRA’s insurance investor page describes term coverage as protection for a limited period. It describes whole and other permanent life insurance as coverage for the insured’s whole life, with a cash-value feature. The cash-value feature is part of permanent policies, not the basic term contract.

Read the policy documents for the insurer’s name and the policy form number. Compare them with the summary you receive. If a line is unclear, ask about it before you sign or pay.

If you're weighing term coverage for someone who depends on you, contact our team to set up a coverage review. The face amount is set when the policy is issued, and the policy shows it.

You name a primary beneficiary and can also name contingent beneficiaries. A contingent beneficiary receives the benefit if the primary beneficiary dies first. Review these names after major life events, such as marriage, divorce, a new child or a change in business ownership.

Federal tax law generally keeps life insurance death benefits out of the beneficiary’s income. Under 26 U.S.C. § 101, gross income generally does not include amounts received under a life insurance contract paid because the insured died. Interest the insurer pays on proceeds it holds is taxable, and there are exceptions, so your facts matter.

Subject to the policy’s exclusions, conditions and contestability period, the insurer reviews a claim once it receives the documents the policy requires and pays it if the claim meets the policy’s terms.

Premiums, term length and the premium payment period

A premium is the amount you pay to keep the policy in force. The policy states how often it is due and for how long you pay it.

Your term length, such as 10, 20 or 30 years, is chosen at purchase. The term you pick affects the premium. Some policies keep the premium level for the term. Others allow premium changes at renewal based on age, and any age-based change must be written in the policy.

Florida requires every insurance contract to give at least 30 days to pay a premium after the first one. The policy stays in force during that grace period. The insurer may charge interest of up to 8 percent a year for those days (Fla. Stat. § 627.453).

For a household or business, build the premium into the monthly budget. Set reminders. A missed payment that runs past the grace period can end coverage, so check the policy’s reinstatement terms.

When a business pays premiums on a life insurance policy under which the business is directly or indirectly a beneficiary, federal law does not allow a deduction for those premiums (26 U.S.C. § 264).

Riders and optional features that may be included

A rider is an added provision that changes the base policy. Not every policy includes riders. Availability, cost and terms vary by insurer and by policy.

Common riders include:

Conversion: lets you move to permanent coverage within a window the policy sets.

Waiver of premium: the insurer waives premiums if the insured becomes disabled, under the policy’s conditions.

Accelerated death benefit: pays part of the death benefit early if the insured has been certified by a physician as terminally ill, meaning an illness or physical condition that can reasonably be expected to result in death within 24 months or less after the certification, as the policy defines it.

Child term: adds coverage for children, within limits the policy sets.

Riders can add to the premium. Each rider has its own exclusions and conditions. Read that wording in the policy itself before you assume a rider applies.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

What term life insurance does not cover

Term life insurance pays only if the insured dies during the term. A death after the term ends is not covered unless the policy was renewed or converted. Term coverage also does not pay living expenses or long-term care costs unless a specific rider applies.

Florida requires that a life policy become incontestable after it has been in force during the insured’s lifetime for 2 years from its date of issue, except for nonpayment of premiums and, at the insurer’s option, provisions on disability benefits and additional insurance specifically against death by accident or accidental means (Fla. Stat. § 627.455). After that period, the insurer cannot contest the policy’s validity. The insurer can still rely on the policy’s exclusions and restrictions (Fla. Stat. § 627.463). This is why accurate answers on the application matter.

Health questions are part of underwriting. Issue and premium class may depend on your health history and insurability. Exclusions are listed in their own section of the policy. Read that section closely.

What happens when a term life insurance policy ends

Term life insurance is not forever. A standard term policy ends when its term ends. No death benefit is paid after that date unless the policy was renewed or converted.

Some policies offer renewal. Renewal premiums may be higher because of an age-based change written in the policy. Some policies also allow conversion to permanent coverage within a stated window. Conversion terms and timing differ by policy, so read them before the window closes.

Many families and business owners match the term to a financial obligation. Common examples include a mortgage, the years children depend on you, or a business loan. A term that ends before the obligation does may leave a gap.

How term life insurance compares with permanent life insurance

Term life insurance covers a set period. Whole life insurance is permanent coverage that includes a cash-value feature. Each type fits different goals.

Lower premiums do not mean a better fit for every reader.

Some whole life policies pay dividends. For a policy summary that includes dividends, Florida law requires a statement that dividends are based on the company’s current dividend scale and are not guaranteed. Fla. Stat. § 626.99 requires that any statement regarding the use of life insurance cost indexes include an explanation that the indexes are useful only for the comparison of the relative costs of two or more similar policies.

Ask three questions when you compare. How long do you need coverage? What happens when the term ends? How does the premium fit your household or business budget? Your answers point toward the right type of policy for your situation.

Talking through your term coverage with our team

You may be reading this for a spouse, a parent or a business partner.
