There is no single price. The premium depends on the insured’s age and health, the premium payment period, the insurer and policy design, and any riders you add. This guide explains each factor in plain words, how to read an illustration, and how the premium fits into your cash flow.

What the $1,000,000 Figure Means in a Whole Life Policy

The $1,000,000 is the face amount, which is the death benefit the insurer pays under the policy. It is not the price you pay. The premium is what you pay the insurer under the policy contract, usually monthly, quarterly, or yearly. A $1,000,000 face amount tells you the size of the benefit. It does not tell you the premium.

Whole life insurance is the generic name for permanent coverage. It stays in force as long as premiums are paid as the contract requires. Under federal tax rules, death benefits are generally not gross income to the beneficiary, though exceptions exist, such as the transfer-for-value rule. You can read the rule in federal rules on death benefits, 26 U.S.C. § 101(a).

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

The Main Factors That Set the Premium

Five main factors set the premium: age, health, sex-based rating, the insurer and policy design, and riders.

Age at issue. The insured’s age when the policy is issued is a major input. A younger applicant generally starts at a lower premium than an older one for the same face amount.

Health and underwriting. Health questions are required, and issue may depend on insurability. Tobacco use and medical history can affect the rate class the insurer assigns.

Sex-based rating. Where an insurer uses sex in its rates, the premium can differ. Florida law also covers errors. If the age or sex of the insured, or of any other individual considered in determining the premium or benefit, was misstated, the amount payable is what the premium would have bought at the correct age or sex, under Fla. Stat. § 627.456.

Insurer and policy design. Two insurers can price the same face amount differently. Compare the insurer’s name, the policy form, and the illustration, not a single number. The Florida life insurance guide explains the main policy types, cash value, and policy loans.

Riders. Each added rider adds cost and its own terms. Price each one separately so you can see what it adds to the total.

How the Premium Payment Period Changes the Annual Amount

A shorter payment period usually means a larger annual premium. A longer period spreads the cost over more years.

Here is an illustrative example, not a quote. Two policies have the same $1,000,000 face amount, the same age, and the same health rating. One is paid over 10 years. The other is paid over the insured’s whole life. The 10-year payments are larger each year, but they stop sooner. The lifetime payments are smaller, but they continue for as long as the policy is in force.

Two practical points matter here. Every policy must allow a grace period of at least 30 days for any premium after the first. The insurer may charge interest of up to 8 percent a year for those days, under Fla. Stat. § 627.453. Confirm the payment schedule and any future premium change in the policy contract and the insurer’s illustration.

Reading an Illustration: Guaranteed, Non-Guaranteed, and Dividends

Read the guaranteed values and the non-guaranteed values separately. Only the guaranteed values are promised by the policy.

Dividends, where a policy offers them, are not guaranteed. They are not a promise of profit from the insurer’s growth. Any growth or cash value figure should appear with its limits, in the same type size and with equal emphasis. Ask what rates the illustration assumes, and what the numbers look like if those rates are lower.

Two items need close review: loans and surrender terms. Under the Florida statute on policy loans, once a policy has a cash surrender value and no premium is in default, the insurer must lend up to the policy’s loan value, using the policy as the only security. The insurer may delay a loan for up to 6 months after the request unless the loan is to pay a premium, and this rule does not apply to term policies. Under Florida law, once a policy has cash surrender value and no premium is in default, the insurer will advance a loan on proper assignment or pledge of the policy and on its sole security, up to its loan value, though the insurer may delay a loan (other than one to pay a premium) for up to 6 months after you apply, under Fla. If unpaid loan interest and debt reach the loan value, the policy can end. Fla. Whole life covers the insured for life and builds cash value.

The NAIC life insurance buyer’s guide compares term and permanent coverage. It covers how much coverage to buy, costs, riders, and questions to ask. Term premiums are often lower at the start. But the two designs are built for different jobs. A term policy fits a need that lasts a set number of years. Whole life fits a need that lasts for life, such as estate or business planning.

Term policies may change premiums at renewal or with age, so read those terms in the policy. This comparison explains design only. It is not a suggestion to replace, drop, or borrow against a policy you already own.

Costs and Cash Flow Beyond the Premium

The premium is only part of the total cost. Add up loans, surrender charges, riders, and tax effects before you decide.

From a CPA’s view, the premium is a fixed cash outflow. Map it to the household budget or business cash flow. Include the due dates, the payment period, and a reserve for a late or missed payment. Our team can help you see how the premium fits the rest of your planning, including the timing of each payment.

Tax treatment adds another layer.

Business owners face separate rules. No deduction is allowed for premiums on a life policy if the taxpayer is directly or indirectly a beneficiary under it, under 26 U.S.C. § 264. How premiums are treated depends on the facts of each case.

Next Steps: Bring Your Questions to a Coverage Review

Our team can walk you through how the insurance options we handle fit your family or business situation, and you can start by contacting us for a coverage review.
