There is no single age. The answer depends on your policy’s level term, its expiration date and the people or obligations it still protects. Term life insurance pays a death benefit only if the insured dies during the coverage period. When that period ends, coverage usually ends too, unless the policy renews or converts.

Many people ask this question after a change they did not plan. A spouse becomes ill. A partner dies. A business owner nears retirement, or a buy-sell agreement is still in place. If you are reading this for someone else, you are not alone in sorting out what the policy says. This page explains how to find the end date, what happens when coverage stops and what to check first.

Why there is no single age to stop paying term life insurance

Each term policy has its own length. The stopping point comes from that policy, not from your age alone.

A 10-year term policy bought at age 40 ends at 50. A 30-year policy bought at 40 runs to 70. Some policies also state a maximum age for coverage. The insurer’s contract sets these dates, so the policy is the place to look.

Your reason for owning the policy matters too. Coverage that protects a mortgage or a child’s schooling may be needed for a fixed number of years. Coverage that funds a business agreement may need to last until a specific event, such as a buy-out or a retirement date. A birthday does not answer either question.

A common mistake is guessing the end date from a round number like 65. Read the policy itself before you stop any payment.

If you are reading this for someone else, you are not alone in sorting out what the policy says. Start with the policy’s declarations or schedule page, which shows the term length.

Age-based changes: Look for any age at which the premium or the coverage changes. Note any maximum age for coverage.

Renewal: Check whether the policy can be renewed and whether renewal requires evidence of insurability. Renewal terms vary by policy, so read the renewal section itself, not a summary.

Conversion: Some term policies include a conversion option. It lets you switch to a permanent policy, such as a whole life insurance policy, under the policy’s stated terms and deadline.

Write the dates on a calendar. Missing a deadline can cost you a choice you wanted to keep.

What happens when a term policy reaches the end of its term

Coverage stops on the expiration date. No death benefit is paid after that date unless the policy was renewed or converted.

Renewal, where offered, usually costs more because premiums rise with age. Check the renewal premium in the policy’s disclosures. Many term policies do not pay back premiums you paid. Some add a return-of-premium rider, which has its own cost and conditions. Check whether yours has one.

Missed payments work differently from ending a policy on purpose. Florida law requires a grace period of not less than 30 days to pay any premium after the first, and the policy stays in force during that period. Fla. Stat. § 627.453 allows the insurer to charge interest of no more than 8 percent a year for the grace days.

A surrender is different. It is a voluntary request to end a policy in exchange for its cash value. Florida’s definition leaves out lapse for nonpayment of premium. Fla. Stat. § 627.4553 covers surrender.

Options when your term coverage is ending

You can usually renew, convert if the policy allows it, or let coverage end. Each choice has costs and limits.

Renew. Compare the renewal premium with the coverage you need today. A higher premium may still fit if dependents or obligations remain.

Convert. If your policy has a conversion option, you may switch to a permanent policy before the deadline. The new policy has its own premium, terms and limits. Ask for those terms in writing before you act.

Let it end. This may fit once debts are paid and no one relies on your income. Review those obligations first, because ending coverage cannot be undone for that policy.

Replace it. A new policy can cost more than its premium suggests. Life insurance cost indexes are useful only for comparing two or more similar policies. If your policy has cash value and an insurance agent recommends surrendering it without recommending that the proceeds fund or purchase another annuity or life insurance policy, Florida law requires written information before the surrender, including surrender charges and any forfeited death benefit.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

When a term policy may still be needed: obligations, business agreements and dependents

A term policy may still be needed while a debt, a dependent or a business obligation remains.

Household needs come first. A surviving spouse may rely on the income. Children may still depend on it for school and daily costs.

Business agreements raise a timing issue. In a cross-purchase buy-sell agreement, each owner buys a policy on the others. The proceeds help fund the purchase of a deceased owner’s share. If the agreement runs longer than the policy term, the policy may end before the buyout is covered.

Key person insurance covers a business if an essential person dies. Its end date should match the years the business depends on that person.

Ownership also matters for estate tax. Under 26 U.S.C. § 2042, insurance proceeds receivable by the executor under policies on the life of the decedent count in the gross estate, to the extent of the amount receivable. Proceeds payable to other beneficiaries can count too, if the insured held any incident of ownership at death.

Questions to answer before deciding to stop paying

Before you stop paying, know the end date, the renewal cost, the conversion deadline and who would be affected.

Dates: Write down the expiration date, the next premium due date and the grace period.

Costs: Note the renewal premium and any age-based change.

Options: Check the conversion deadline and any return-of-premium terms.

People: List who depends on the policy, including a spouse, children or business partners.

New coverage: Ask whether a new policy would require health questions and whether issue depends on health.

Keep the old policy in force until a new one is issued and active.
