The right choice depends on age, health, budget, and why the coverage is needed. This guide explains what to compare so you can judge any policy on its facts.

Many families in Florida, including those in Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville, start with the question, “Who has the best whole life insurance for seniors?” It’s a fair question. But the answer starts with the person, not a list of companies. NR CPAs & Business Advisors is a Miami CPA firm.

Why there is no single best whole life policy for every senior

No single whole life policy fits every older adult. A policy that suits a healthy 60-year-old may not suit someone with a recent health change. Start with the reason for buying. Common reasons include:

Final expenses, such as funeral and medical bills.

An estate plan that needs cash for costs or taxes.

Income support for a spouse or children.

Planning for a parent’s later years.

Each reason points to a different amount of coverage, budget, and payment plan. So start every comparison with the person’s own situation, not with a ranking. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide explains how to compare policies and costs and what to ask before buying. Health questions are required, and issue may depend on insurability. Underwriting looks at medical history, current medications, height and weight, and, in some cases, medical records.

Issue age matters too. The age at which the policy is issued affects the premium and the amount of coverage the insurer offers. Answer every health question completely and accurately.

Under Florida Statutes § 627.455, a life policy generally cannot be contested after it has been in force during the insured’s lifetime for 2 years, but the statute has exceptions, including nonpayment of premiums and certain disability-benefit and accidental-death provisions. Florida law requires life policies to become incontestable once they have been in force during the insured’s lifetime for 2 years from the date of issue. The exceptions are nonpayment of premiums and, at the insurer’s option, disability benefits and extra accidental-death coverage. Stat. § 627.456, if the age or sex of the insured, or of any other individual considered in determining the premium or benefit, has been misstated, the amount payable becomes what the premium would have bought according to the correct age or sex. Check the date of birth on every form.

Some policies offer graded or limited benefits in the early years. Read those terms closely before you choose a policy.

Is whole life or term life insurance better for seniors?

Whole life covers the insured for life, as long as premiums are paid. Term life covers a set period. Each one fits a different need, so the choice comes down to how long the coverage must last.

Term life insurance is typically less expensive than cash-value policies. The Colorado Division of Insurance explains that whole and other cash-value policies also fund cash value through their premiums.

For older buyers, term premiums can rise sharply at renewal or after the level period ends. Check the age-based change in the specific policy before you decide.

Many whole life policies have level premiums. Still, confirm the premium, the payment period, and any change in face amount in the policy itself. A side-by-side view is on our whole life vs. term insurance page.

How cash value, loans, and withdrawals work

Cash value is the part of a whole life policy that builds inside the contract. It is not a separate account you can draw on at will.

A policy loan is an advance from the insurer, secured by the policy. Florida law requires a policy provision that, after the policy has a cash surrender value and while no premium is in default, the insurer will advance a loan on proper assignment or pledge of the policy. The policy shall reserve to the insurer the right to defer the granting of a loan, other than for the payment of any premium, for 6 months after application. A strong rating does not mean a policy suits your situation. Confirm that the insurer is licensed in Florida and in your state of residence.

Estate planning and cross-border needs for senior families

Estate planning life insurance can give heirs cash for estate costs, help equalize inheritances, or provide liquidity when assets are hard to sell.

According to this IRS revenue procedure, the basic exclusion amount under IRC § 2010(c)(3)(A) is $15,000,000, and the inflation adjustment in § 2010(c)(3)(B) applies only to decedents dying in a calendar year after 2026. Ownership still matters. IRC § 2042 provides that the value of the gross estate shall include the value of all property to the extent of the amount receivable by the executor as insurance under policies on the life of the decedent. It also includes the amount receivable by all other beneficiaries as insurance under policies on the life of the decedent with respect to which the decedent possessed at his death any of the incidents of ownership, exercisable either alone or in conjunction with any other person. IRC § 2042 reads: “For purposes of the preceding sentence, the term “incident of ownership” includes a reversionary interest (whether arising by the express terms of the policy or other instrument or by operation of law) only if the value of such reversionary interest exceeded 5 percent of the value of the policy immediately before the death of the decedent.”

Amounts paid because of the insured’s death are generally not gross income to the beneficiary. Interest paid on proceeds left with the insurer is taxable. Under IRC § 101, amounts received under a life insurance contract because of the insured’s death are generally excluded from gross income, subject to the exceptions stated in that section.

When a parent lives abroad, settle ownership, beneficiary, and premium payment questions before applying. Decide who pays the premiums, from which account, and who receives the benefit. Tax and cash-flow questions belong in the same review as the policy.

How to buy whole life insurance for an older adult

The buying path runs in order. First, gather health and financial information. Next, complete a coverage review. Then come the application, underwriting, the insurer’s decision, and delivery of the policy.

Read the policy after delivery.
