For some families and business owners, it can be. For others, term coverage or no new policy may fit better. Whole life insurance is permanent coverage, so the answer turns on three things: how long you need coverage, whether the need lasts your whole life, and whether the premium fits your cash flow for many years.

This page explains the policy in plain words. It covers what cash value does and does not promise, the common objections, and the questions to answer before you decide. It is designed to stay in force for the insured’s lifetime, as long as premiums are paid. Term life insurance covers a set number of years instead.

A whole life policy has three parts:

Death benefit. The amount paid to the beneficiary when the insured dies.

Premium. The regular payment that keeps the policy in force.

Cash value. A value that builds inside the policy over time. It is part of the contract, not a separate account.

You may be able to borrow against the cash value. If a loan and unpaid interest grow to equal or exceed the loan value, the policy may end. The insurer must mail at least 30 days’ notice first. An unpaid loan also reduces what your beneficiaries receive.

This page discusses a generic whole life policy. When a specific policy is reviewed, the insurer and policy form are named.

Is Whole Life Insurance a Good Investment?

Whole life insurance is an insurance policy first. It is not a promise of returns, and this page does not treat it as an investment. Its main job is the death benefit.

Some values in a whole life policy are guaranteed by the contract. Others are not. Ask for both, shown side by side with equal weight. Non-guaranteed values depend on the insurer’s future experience and on conditions that change over time. Dividends, where a policy offers them, are not guaranteed.

Headlines often compare cash value growth with stock or bond returns. That comparison only works when both sides use the same assumptions, fees, and tax treatment. Federal law also sets the test a contract must meet to count as life insurance. Under Internal Revenue Code section 7702, a contract meets the cash value accumulation test if, by its terms, the cash surrender value may not at any time exceed the net single premium which would have to be paid at such time to fund future benefits under the contract.

The Common Objections and How to Weigh Them

The most common argument is to buy term coverage and invest the difference. Term life insurance and cash-value policies are priced differently, because whole life premiums also fund cash value. The trade-off is simple to state. You pay more now for permanent coverage and a cash value feature. The invested difference carries its own risk and costs, and its results depend on how it is invested.

Permanent coverage also costs more to keep. Premiums are generally higher than term premiums for the same death benefit. Surrender charges can apply when a policy is ended early.

Lapse is the next risk to understand. For life insurance policies, Florida law (Fla. Stat. 627.453) requires a grace period of at least 30 days to pay a premium after the first. The policy stays in force during that grace period, under Fla. Stat. 627.453. If premiums stop after that, the policy can lapse. What happens to the cash value then depends on the policy contract.

For more depth, see whole life versus term life insurance and term and whole life coverage choices.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. Final expenses are one example. Estate planning is another, where the death benefit may give heirs cash to cover obligations.

Ownership matters for estate tax. Under Internal Revenue Code section 2042 (26 U.S.C. § 2042), the death benefit of a life insurance policy is generally included in the decedent’s gross estate if it is receivable by the executor, or if the decedent held any incidents of ownership in the policy at death. According to the IRS, § 2010(c)(3) is amended to raise the basic exclusion amount to $15,000,000 for calendar year 2026. Whether your estate is affected depends on your facts. Income tax works differently. Amounts paid because of the insured’s death are generally not gross income, subject to listed exceptions.

Key person and buy-sell planning is another fit. In a buy-sell plan, the policy can fund an obligation between owners that must be met when an owner dies.

For households living abroad, cross-border planning needs review. Questions include who owns the policy, who the beneficiary is, and where the estate sits. These are points to review, not outcomes.

Questions to Answer Before You Decide

Premiums depend on age, health, the insurer, the death benefit, riders, and the payment period. A premium figure needs your details before it means anything.

Cash flow comes next. Ask whether the premium can be paid in lean years too. A missed payment starts the grace period, and a lapse can follow.

If you already own a policy, surrendering it and replacing it are governed by different rules. Under Florida law (Fla. Stat. 627.4553), when an agent recommends surrendering a policy with cash value and the proceeds are not recommended to fund another policy or annuity, written information must be provided before the surrender is executed. A replacement requires Form OIR-B2-312 with the application (69O-151.007, .010), and borrowing more than 25% of a policy’s loan value counts as a replacement (69O-151.002(5)). The written information required under Fla. Stat. 627.4553 includes the estimated surrender charge and possible tax consequences.

Tax treatment of cash value, loans, and death benefits depends on the policy and your situation. Review these points in a coverage review before you act.

Is whole life insurance a good investment?

Whole life insurance is an insurance policy first. It is not a promise of returns.

Can I borrow against a whole life policy?

Yes, Florida law requires a loan provision for policies with cash surrender value.

How long is the grace period for a late premium?

In Florida, the grace period for a life insurance policy after the first premium is at least 30 days (Fla. Stat. 627.453).

Talk Through Your Situation With Our Team

Maybe a parent’s whole life policy came up in a family conversation.
