The main types are term life insurance and permanent life insurance. Term covers a set number of years. Permanent coverage can last for life, as long as premiums are paid under the policy’s terms.

Why people compare types of life insurance

Life insurance is a contract. The insurer pays a death benefit to the beneficiaries you name when the insured person dies, under the policy’s terms. People compare types because that benefit can serve very different goals.

A parent may want money to replace income while the children are young. A business owner may need funds to keep the company steady after a partner’s death. An estate may need cash for bills and taxes, so other assets don’t have to be sold in a rush. A family with relatives abroad may need a policy written around where those relatives live.

This page explains the types our practice handles, in plain words: term, whole life, key person, buy-sell, estate planning, and NRI coverage. Each section covers the purpose, who usually uses it, and its main limits. Insurance is offered through a licensed agent, separately from our accounting practice.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

The two broad families: term and permanent

Term and permanent are the two broad families. Term protects you for a set period. Permanent protects you for life, while premiums are paid under the policy’s terms.

The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation puts the core difference this way. Term life insurance covers a specified number of years and has no cash value. Permanent life insurance stays in force while premiums are paid, and it has a cash-value account you can borrow against or withdraw from.

The tradeoff is easy to see. Term can match a defined need for a defined time, but it ends. Permanent coverage can last longer, and its cash value follows the policy’s terms. Whole life is one permanent form. Universal and variable life are others, and the Florida Department of Financial Services guide covers them too.

Term life insurance

Term life insurance pays a death benefit only if the insured dies during the set term. Families often match the term to a specific need, such as a mortgage or the years until children are independent. Choosing the length is the key decision, and it should match the need the policy covers.

Term has clear limits. Coverage ends when the term ends. Some policies allow renewal or conversion, but those options and any age-based premium changes depend on the policy form. Term policies do not build cash value. Florida’s policy loan rules do not apply to term policies or to term riders, under Fla. Stat. § 627.458.

Whole life insurance

Whole life insurance is permanent coverage that builds cash value while premiums are paid under the policy’s terms. When you compare policies, keep the guaranteed and non-guaranteed parts separate.

Guaranteed values are the amounts the policy states, such as the death benefit and guaranteed cash values. Dividends, if a policy pays them, are not guaranteed. When a page refers to policy dividends, it should state that dividends are not guaranteed.

Policy loans work differently from a bank loan. Under Fla. Stat. § 627.458, a loan becomes available once the policy has a cash surrender value and no premium is in default. The insurer may deduct existing debt, including interest, from the loan value or the loan proceeds. Read your policy’s loan terms before you borrow.

Late premiums get a window. Under Fla. Stat. § 627.453, a life insurance policy must give a grace period of not less than 30 days for payment of a premium after the first. The policy stays in force during that grace period.

Key person insurance

Key person insurance is life insurance a business owns on an essential owner or employee, with the business named as beneficiary. The business can use the proceeds to cover lost revenue, recruiting costs, or the cost of replacing a critical contributor. A common mistake is buying coverage without writing down what the money should cover.

Florida law requires an insurable interest, and it must exist when the contract is made. See Fla. Stat. § 627.404.

Under Section 101 of the Internal Revenue Code, death benefits from a life insurance contract are generally excluded from gross income, but exceptions apply, including the employer-owned policy rules in Section 101(j) and the transfer-for-value rule. Under Section 264 of the Internal Revenue Code, except as provided in subsection (e), no deduction is allowed for any interest paid or accrued on any indebtedness with respect to one or more life insurance policies owned by the taxpayer covering the life of any individual. How premiums and proceeds are recorded depends on the facts of the business. That is where our accounting work connects, and it stays separate from the insurance itself.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. The contract sets how a departing owner’s share is bought if that owner dies or leaves. Without cash set aside, the surviving owners may need to borrow money or sell assets to complete the purchase.

Life insurance can supply that cash, so the surviving owners or the business can finish the buyout. Florida law recognizes the link. An individual party to a business buy-sell contract has an insurable interest in each other party’s life, for that contract only, under Fla. Stat. § 627.404.

Three points must line up. First, who owns each policy. Second, how the share is valued. Third, who is named as beneficiary. If the agreement and the policies say different things, the buyout may not have the cash it needs.

Estate planning life insurance

Estate planning life insurance can give an estate cash to pay expenses, debts, or taxes. That cash can help keep other assets from being sold in a hurry. Ownership and beneficiary designations decide who controls the proceeds and who receives them.

Ownership matters for tax purposes too. Under Section 2042 of the Internal Revenue Code, the value of the gross estate includes amounts receivable by the executor as insurance under policies on the life of the decedent. Insurance that other beneficiaries receive also counts, if the decedent held incidents of ownership, meaning rights to control the policy, at death.

Federal figures give context. The IRS revenue procedure for 2026 amends § 2010(c)(3) by increasing the basic exclusion amount to $15,000,000 for calendar year 2026. Whether estate tax applies to a particular estate depends on the facts.

NRI life insurance

NRI life insurance is coverage written for a non-resident Indian or for a family whose members live across borders. The policy should fit where the insured lives, how income is documented, and how premiums get paid.

Cross-border households often face different questions. These include residence, the currency of premium payments, payment logistics, and the documents the insurer asks for. Each insurer sets its own requirements for these items.

Underwriting, including health questions, varies by insurer and by policy. Issue may depend on insurability.

Florida law lets an individual buy a policy on his or her own life for the benefit of any person, under Fla. Stat. § 627.404. Gift rules matter too. For 2026, the gift tax annual exclusion is $19,000 per donee, according to the IRS gift tax FAQ. For calendar year 2026, under the IRS revenue procedure for 2026, the applicable amount for gifts to a spouse who is not a citizen of the United States is the first $194,000 (instead of the amount provided in paragraph (1) of this section 4.42).

Next steps for your situation

A coverage review is where these types get matched to your facts.
