It may also build cash value under the contract, and some policies pay dividends that are not guaranteed. This guide answers the question, what does whole life insurance provide, and it places each limit next to the feature it affects.

This page is general information, not tax or legal advice. NR CPAs & Business Advisors is a Miami CPA firm. Insurance is offered through Nischay Rawal, a Florida-licensed insurance agent, separately from the accounting practice.

What whole life insurance is, in plain words

Whole life insurance is a type of permanent life insurance. It is designed to stay in force for the insured’s life, but only while the policy’s premium and other terms are met. The generic name is whole life insurance policy. It is life insurance. It is not a savings account or a retirement plan.

Most policy summaries and illustrations cover four parts. These are the death benefit, the premiums, the cash value and any dividends. The Florida Department of Financial Services life insurance guide explains these terms, along with whole life, limited-pay policies and policy loans.

The details depend on the insurer and the issued contract. Two policies with similar names can work differently. Each feature below is tied to the contract and to your own situation.

If you're reviewing a whole life policy for someone you love, contact our team to set up a coverage review. Payment depends on the policy being in force, the claim being approved and the insurer’s review. The insurer pays claims, not this firm.

Unpaid premiums and outstanding loans can reduce the amount paid. Florida law requires every insurance contract to allow a grace period of not less than 30 days for payment of any premium after the first. The policy stays in force during that period.

Federal tax rules also matter. Section 101 of the Internal Revenue Code provides that, except as otherwise stated in its exceptions, gross income does not include amounts received under a life insurance contract if those amounts are paid by reason of the insured’s death. How this applies depends on the policy and the individual’s circumstances. That section also lists exceptions, including certain transfers for value. Tax treatment depends on the policy, who owns it and your situation. This is general information, not tax advice.

Estate inclusion also depends on the facts. Section 2042 of the Internal Revenue Code provides that the gross estate includes amounts receivable by the executor as insurance under policies on the decedent’s life, to the extent of that amount. How this applies depends on the policy, the applicable rules and the individual’s situation. Insurance receivable by other beneficiaries can also be included when the decedent held incidents of ownership at death. Ownership matters here.

How premiums and lifelong coverage terms work

Whole life premiums come in two common structures. Level-premium whole life uses premium terms set in the contract. Limited-pay whole life requires premiums over a shorter period stated in the contract. Which structure applies depends on the policy you are considering.

How much is a $100,000 whole life insurance policy per month?

There is no single monthly figure for this policy. Premiums depend on the insurer, the policy, age, health, underwriting and individual circumstances. Any sample number you see is only illustrative. Age and circumstances can change both the cost and the amount a person needs.

What happens after a 20-year whole life premium period?

What happens at the end of a stated premium period depends on the contract. Some policies become paid up, so no further premiums are due. Others still require payments. Coverage can continue for life only while the contract’s terms are met, so check the contract’s own wording.

Cash value: what it may build, and what loans do to it

Whole life insurance may build cash value under the contract. It is not a savings account, an accumulation plan or a tax-efficient investment. Cash value consists of guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts. The contract and the insurer determine both, and the non-guaranteed part can change.

Loans and withdrawals can reduce both the cash value and the death benefit. Loan terms depend on the policy. Florida’s policy loan statute allows an insurer to advance funds on a policy that has cash surrender value and no premium in default.

If unpaid loan interest builds until total debt equals or exceeds the loan value, the policy can terminate. The insurer must mail at least 30 days’ notice first. Cash value is not an emergency fund. Access depends on the contract, and using it can reduce coverage.

Premium timing can also matter. Whether a contract is a modified endowment contract depends on its premium payments and the applicable federal tax rules, so the policy’s terms and the individual’s situation matter. Tax treatment of distributions can differ for those contracts, so the policy’s status should be reviewed.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

Dividends, if a policy pays them

Some whole life policies are participating policies. These may pay dividends that the insurer declares. Dividends are not guaranteed. No policyholder should count on a set dividend or assume a share of the insurer’s growth.

In any illustration, non-guaranteed values should appear separately from guaranteed values. The limitations should sit next to them, with the same emphasis. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide covers riders and questions to ask before buying.

Optional riders are add-on features some insurers offer. Availability and terms depend on the policy and underwriting. A rider’s benefit should be read in the policy itself, next to its limits.

Whole life compared with term, and the tradeoffs

Whole life provides permanent coverage and may build cash value. Term life provides coverage for a set period. The NAIC guide explains the difference between term and permanent coverage. Our term life insurance page covers the comparison in more detail.

Whole life has tradeoffs. Premiums are often higher than term premiums, depending on the insurer, policy and person. The policy is more complex. Cash value builds according to the contract, so it may grow more slowly than a reader expects. Whole life may not suit every need.

Comparing illustrations from different insurers is not the approach here. Instead, bring the illustration you have, or the one proposed to you, to a coverage review with us. We review the specific policy and how it fits your situation.

Common questions: paying off a policy and how it ends
<details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Do you ever pay off a whole life policy?

Some contracts become paid up after a stated premium period. Each depends on the contract terms.

Replacing an existing policy needs careful review. Section 1035 of the Internal Revenue Code provides that no gain or loss is recognized on specified exchanges of life insurance contracts, subject to the conditions and definitions in the statute. Florida also requires an agent who recommends surrendering a cash-value policy to provide written information first, including possible tax consequences.
</details>

Next step: a coverage review with a licensed agent

You may be reading this after a family member’s illness or death, after a change in a business partnership, or while reviewing a policy someone else holds.
