Usually, no. A standard term policy generally has no cash value, so it generally doesn’t pay a cash refund when the level term ends. The main exception is a return-of-premium rider, and whether your policy has one depends on the contract. This page explains each case, whether you hold the policy yourself or are reading for a family member.

The short answer for someone reading this on a family member’s behalf

A standard term policy generally ends without a refund, but the details depend on your contract. You may be reading about a policy a parent, spouse, or business partner bought, or one you signed and don’t remember well. That’s a good reason to start with the basics.

A term policy covers you for a set number of years. Premiums pay for that protection. When the term ends, coverage generally ends too, unless the contract allows renewal or conversion. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide explains how term and permanent policies differ. The Florida DFS life insurance guide covers cash value and policy loans for Florida readers.

Coverage, premiums, and benefits depend on your contract and your situation. The sections below cover each common scenario.

Quick answers

Do I get money back if I cancel term life insurance? Generally no. A standard term policy usually has no cash surrender value, so cancelling it generally doesn’t produce a cash payment.

Does term life insurance have cash value? Standard term policies generally don’t build cash value. Some riders and contracts have different terms.

Can I convert term life insurance to whole life? Some contracts allow conversion within a stated period. Whether that option exists depends on the policy and on insurer underwriting at that time.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

What happens to coverage when a level term period ends

Coverage generally ends when the level term stated in your policy ends, unless the policy is renewed or converted.

Renewal may be possible under some contracts. Renewal premiums may be higher than the level premium and can change with age. The renewal terms depend on the insurer and the policy.

Conversion works differently. Some contracts let you change a term policy into a permanent policy within a stated period. Whether that option exists, and on what terms, depends on the contract. Insurer underwriting and your insurability at that time also matter. Don’t count on a future conversion or a future coverage increase, because both depend on those conditions.

Write down the expiration date and any conversion deadline from the policy. Missing a deadline may end an option that would otherwise be available.

How return-of-premium term policies work and what to check

A return-of-premium term policy may refund some or all of the premiums you paid if you outlive the level term, according to its contract. This is the main case where you may get money back at the end of term life insurance.

The refund is tied to the premiums paid under the contract. The exact refund rule, conditions, and exclusions depend on the policy. Return-of-premium coverage is priced differently from standard term. The cost difference depends on the insurer, the policy, underwriting, and your circumstances.

When you review a return-of-premium policy, gather these items:

The level term length and the date coverage ends

The refund rule, including when and how the refund is paid

The conditions you must meet to claim the refund

Any benefit reduction options that affect the refund

What the contract says about cancellation and lapse

Cancelling a term policy and whether any premium comes back

Cancelling a standard term policy generally doesn’t return any cash, because the policy usually has no cash surrender value.

Florida law describes a surrender, for policies with a cash value, as a voluntary request, before maturity, for the policy’s current cash surrender value. Lapse for nonpayment of premium falls outside that definition (Fla. Stat. § 627.4553). Unused premium for a coverage period is generally not refunded under a standard term contract.

Lapse and cancellation are different events. If a premium is late, Florida law requires every insurance contract to give a grace period of at least 30 days to pay a premium after the first. The policy stays in force during that time (Fla. Stat. § 627.453).

A return-of-premium policy may treat cancellation differently, depending on its terms. Cancelling also ends the death benefit. It may affect your ability to convert or reapply later, depending on the policy and insurer.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. That cash value includes both guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts.

Dividends, where a policy pays them, are not guaranteed. Loans or withdrawals can reduce both the cash value and the death benefit. The terms depend on the policy.

Florida’s policy loan law says its loan section does not apply to term policies or to term insurance provided by riders (Fla. Stat. § 627.458). That’s one clear difference between term and whole life.

Whole life isn’t a savings or investment account. How any cash value or death benefit is taxed depends on the policy and your situation. Under Internal Revenue Code section 101, gross income generally does not include amounts received under a life insurance contract that are paid by reason of the insured’s death, except as otherwise provided in paragraphs (2) and (3) and subsections (d), (f), and (j) of that section, and tax treatment depends on the policy and the individual’s circumstances.

To discuss whether changing your current coverage fits your situation, contact NR CPAs & Business Advisors for a coverage review.

For a fuller explanation, see the whole life insurance guide and what whole life insurance provides.

Next step: a coverage review with NR CPAs & Business Advisors

If a term policy is nearing its end date, or you’re reviewing one a relative holds, a coverage review is a practical next step.
