It may build under the contract as premiums are paid. It sits apart from the death benefit, which is the amount the policy pays when the insured dies, under its terms.

Cash value includes two kinds of amounts. Guaranteed amounts are the ones the contract states. Non-guaranteed amounts depend on the insurer’s results and the policy’s terms, and they can rise or fall.

The face amount is the coverage. Cash value may be reached through a policy loan or a surrender, and it consists of guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts. A loan can reduce both the cash value and the death benefit, and loan terms depend on the policy.

How cash value builds over time

Cash value builds at a pace set by the specific policy. It may grow more slowly in the early years. Premiums paid, the contract’s schedule, and the insurer’s practices all shape the result.

Illustrations are projections that rely on assumptions. Read the assumptions and limits printed next to every figure. An illustration shows what a set of assumptions would produce. It is not a promise of what your policy will do.

Some whole life policies pay dividends. Dividends, where a policy pays them, are not guaranteed, and their size can change. Non-guaranteed amounts may rise or fall over the life of the contract.

Bring your own policy’s figures to a coverage review with Nischay Rawal, a licensed insurance agent who offers insurance separately from the accounting practice of NR CPAs & Business Advisors. Your contract, not a generic chart, controls the numbers.

Guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts, side by side

Guaranteed amounts are set out in the contract. Non-guaranteed amounts depend on the insurer and the policy’s terms. Keep the two apart when you read a policy.

Item

Guaranteed

Non-guaranteed

What it is

Values the contract states

Values that depend on the insurer and policy terms

Can it change?

Only as the contract allows

Yes, it may rise or fall

Premium terms also need care. Premium terms depend on the policy and contract. The level-premium period is set by the specific policy, not assumed. Check your contract for how long premiums stay level and whether they can change. No one can predict the result for any single policy.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. If a policy is surrendered, the amount paid out, called the cash surrender value, is generally the policy’s cash value (made up of guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts) minus any surrender charges and any outstanding policy loans and loan interest. Non-guaranteed amounts, including any dividends, are not guaranteed, and the exact calculation depends on the specific policy and contract.

Surrender ends the policy. The life insurance coverage and the death benefit end with it. Ending coverage is a major decision, so review the terms first.

Tax treatment depends on the policy, the amount received compared with premiums paid, and your situation. Exceptions apply. Section 101 of the Internal Revenue Code provides that gross income does not include amounts received under a life insurance contract if such amounts are paid by reason of the insured’s death, subject to the exceptions in that section and to the policy’s terms (Internal Revenue Code § 101). That rule covers death benefits, so surrender outcomes need a separate review.

Florida has a rule for agents. Florida law may require written information before an agent recommends surrendering a cash value policy without recommending a new one; see Fla. Stat. § 627.4553 for its scope and exceptions. That information covers the estimated surrender charge, possible tax consequences, and any forfeited death benefit.

Review the surrender terms in your own contract. Then contact this firm to go through them with you.

Borrowing against cash value and how loans change the policy

A policy loan reduces the cash value and the death benefit. Think of a loan as debt against the policy. Loan terms depend on the policy and the insurer.

Under Florida law, a policy loan is available after the policy has a cash surrender value and while no premium is in default. Under Fla. Stat. § 627.458, an insurer may defer granting a policy loan for 6 months after application, except a loan used to pay premiums to the insurer. That section also covers interest. Unpaid interest can be added to the debt and bear interest at the same rate.

If the policy so provides, and total debt equals or exceeds the loan value, the policy can terminate. That happens only after at least 30 days’ notice is mailed by the insurer. This rule does not apply to term policies or term riders.

Premiums also carry a grace period. Florida law requires a grace period of not less than 30 days for any premium after the first, under Fla. Stat. § 627.453.

Cash value is not an emergency fund or a dependable backstop. Loans and withdrawals reduce both cash value and death benefit.

What are the different types of whole life insurance?

Whole life designs vary by insurer, and names differ. Common designs include traditional whole life, participating policies that may pay dividends, which are not guaranteed, and limited-pay designs. Read each design against its own contract.

Each design structures premiums, cash value, and dividends differently. It describes universal and variable life as other permanent variations.

Term life is different. Whole life provides lifetime coverage and may include a cash value feature.

Premiums and costs depend on the insurer, the policy, underwriting, and the individual’s circumstances. No single figure applies to every buyer. Coverage may require health questions, and issue depends on insurability.

Quick answers

Can you cash out whole life insurance? Yes, if the contract allows surrender. Surrender ends the coverage and the death benefit.

Does a loan reduce the death benefit? Yes. Loans reduce cash value and death benefit, and unpaid interest can add to the debt.

Are whole life dividends guaranteed? No. Dividends, where a policy pays them, are not guaranteed.

Is the death benefit taxable? Federal law generally excludes death benefits from gross income, subject to exceptions. Your situation matters.

Next step: a coverage review with Nischay Rawal

If you hold a whole life policy, or are weighing one, you may be reading this about a policy a relative or your business owns.
