Generally, for the insured’s lifetime, as long as the policy stays in force under its terms. Whole life, which is also called permanent life insurance, is designed to provide coverage over the insured’s entire lifetime, subject to the policy’s terms. Term life covers only a limited period.

In plain words, a policy is “in force” when it has not lapsed, been surrendered, or been changed in a way that ends or reduces coverage. Coverage can continue for life only while the policy stays in force.

The contract sets the coverage period, not a general rule. Some whole life contracts state a maturity age, so the exact answer is written in your policy. Coverage, premiums and benefits also depend on the issuing insurer’s underwriting and the policy’s terms.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

Coverage period versus premium period: two different clocks

The coverage period and the premium payment period are separate. They can end at different times. Reading both is the first step in understanding your policy.

With level-premium whole life, premiums are scheduled over the life of the policy. The exact schedule is set in the specific policy and contract. Premium terms vary by insurer and product, so ask how long payments are due.

Limited-pay whole life spreads premiums over a shorter stated period. Coverage may continue under the contract after premiums end, subject to the policy’s terms. The end of premium payments does not, by itself, end the death benefit.

Single-premium whole life is paid with one premium at the start. Whether a policy uses this design depends on the insurer and the contract. Check the premium section of the policy document for the exact terms.

What keeps a whole life policy in force

Several things can affect whether coverage continues. The main ones are premium payments, policy loans, withdrawals, and surrender. A policy can also end if premiums go unpaid past the grace period.

Florida law sets a minimum grace period. Under Fla. Stat. § 627.453, the grace-period provisions for life insurance policies provide a period of not less than 30 days for paying premiums after the first, subject to the policy’s terms. The policy stays in force during that grace period. The insurer may charge interest on the overdue days, up to 8 percent per year.

Policy loans follow their own rules. Under Fla. Stat. § 627.458, a policy with a cash surrender value can receive a loan from the insurer when no premium is in default beyond the grace period. Cash value consists of guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts, and any loan reduces both the cash value and the death benefit; terms depend on the policy and insurer. If total debt, including interest, equals or exceeds the loan value, the policy may terminate. That cannot happen until at least 30 days’ notice is mailed.

A loan can reduce both the cash value and the death benefit. Loan terms depend on the policy.

For a policyholder age 64 or older, a policy in force at least 1 year cannot lapse for nonpayment without notice. Under Fla. Stat. § 627.4555, the insurer must mail notice at least 21 days before the lapse. A designated secondary addressee also receives notice.

Can you outlive a whole life policy?

Usually, a whole life contract is written to cover the insured for life. Some contracts, however, state a maturity age. At maturity, the policy may end or pay out according to its terms.

A maturity date and any endowment terms are set by the contract. Two policies with the same name can read differently. The label “whole life” alone does not tell you the maturity age.

Look for the maturity and endowment pages in your policy document. They explain what happens at maturity; any payment of cash value consists of guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts and depends on the contract and insurer. Contact NR CPAs & Business Advisors to walk through those pages with you.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Tax treatment depends on the policy and your situation.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. Premium payments may be complete at that point, while coverage continues under the contract. For level-premium designs, premiums generally continue beyond 20 years, and the schedule is set by the policy.

Cash value may build under the contract. That value includes guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts. Non-guaranteed amounts can change over time.

Dividends are not guaranteed. Where a policy pays dividends, the amount depends on the insurer’s results and the policy’s terms. A policyholder’s values are not a share of the insurer’s profits or growth.

Tax treatment of cash value, loans and death benefits depends on the policy, your circumstances, and applicable rules. Under Section 101 of the Internal Revenue Code, amounts received under a life insurance contract because of the insured’s death may be excluded from gross income, subject to the exceptions stated in that section and to the policy and the individual’s circumstances. This is general information, not tax advice. Specified exceptions apply, so the result depends on your situation.

Guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts in a whole life illustration

Guaranteed values are the amounts the contract states. Dividends are not guaranteed. Amounts that are not guaranteed may be higher or lower than an illustration shows, depending on the insurer’s experience and other factors.

An illustration shows examples under stated assumptions. It is not a promise. Read the assumptions and limitations with the same care as the numbers.

Ask these questions about any illustration. Which values are guaranteed? What assumptions does it use? How would a loan change the cash value and the death benefit? How long are premiums due?

Information about surrendering a policy may include the possibility of tax consequences and the amount of any forfeited death benefit, and both depend on the policy terms and the individual’s circumstances.

Bring your questions to a coverage review with Nischay Rawal

You may be reading this because you already own a whole life policy, or because one was raised with you.
