How much each one matters depends on the specific policy, the insurer, and your own situation.

You may be reading this for a parent, a spouse, or a business partner. Maybe an agent sent you a proposal you did not expect. Maybe a health change or a business agreement made the question urgent. Those are hard places to decide from, so this page goes slowly.

This page is general information, not tax or legal advice. It covers premiums, cash value, surrenders, loans, flexibility, inflation, and illustrations. Each point ties back to contract terms you can check in your own policy. Read it as a checklist. That is the first downside most buyers notice. Term life insurance covers a limited period, while whole life provides coverage for life and includes a cash-value feature, according to FINRA’s insurance guidance. The cash-value feature is part of why the cost is usually higher.

Your actual premium depends on the insurer, the policy, underwriting, your age, and your health. The figure in your proposal is the one that matters for your decision.

Check the level-premium period in your contract. It shows how long the premium is set to stay at the stated level. Premium terms depend on the policy and contract, so do not assume they stay the same for life.

A higher premium does not, on its own, mean a policy is wrong for you. A lower one does not mean it is right. Cash flow matters here. A premium that is hard to keep paying can strain a household budget or a business. When payments stop, coverage can end, as the next section explains.

Cash value may build slowly, and part of it is not guaranteed

Whole life insurance may build cash value under the contract. It is not a savings account, and it does not grow on a set schedule. Term life has no cash value, while whole life policies can build cash value that a policyholder may borrow against or cash out, according to the South Carolina Department of Insurance life insurance guide.

Cash value includes guaranteed amounts and non-guaranteed amounts. The guaranteed amounts are listed in the contract. The non-guaranteed amounts depend on the insurer’s experience and the policy design. They can be higher or lower than shown.

Some policies pay dividends. Dividends are not guaranteed, and some policies may not pay them at all. If an illustration includes dividends, treat those values as one possible outcome, not a promise.

In the early years, cash value may be small compared with the premiums you have paid. Surrender values may be lower than premiums paid, especially early in the contract. Ask for the guaranteed values table next to any non-guaranteed figures.

Surrendering or letting the policy lapse ends the coverage

Surrendering a policy means you ask the insurer to end it in exchange for its cash surrender value. A lapse means the policy ends because premiums were not paid. Both end the coverage, so know which one you are considering.

Florida law gives you time to catch up on a missed payment. Every life insurance contract must allow at least 30 days to pay any premium after the first, and the policy stays in force during that period. The insurer may charge interest of up to 8 percent a year for those days, according to Fla. Stat. § 627.453.

Surrender charges, reduced paid-up options (coverage at a lower amount with no further premiums), and extended term options (coverage for a set period) depend on the specific contract. Some contracts offer one or more of these when premiums stop. Others may not. Read the section of your policy that covers premiums stopping.

Florida law also requires written information when an agent recommends surrendering a policy with cash value and does not recommend using the money for another policy. That information includes the estimated surrender charge, possible tax consequences, and any forfeited death benefit, according to Fla. Stat. § 627.4553.

Policy loans and withdrawals can reduce cash value and death benefit

A policy loan or withdrawal can reduce both the cash value and the death benefit. Terms depend on the policy and the insurer, so read yours before borrowing.

Florida’s policy loan rule lets an insurer advance a loan once a policy has a cash surrender value and no premium is in default. The insurer’s security for that loan is the policy itself, according to Fla. Stat. § 627.458. A policy loan also charges interest, and the interest terms depend on the policy.

Unpaid interest can add to the loan. If your policy allows it, the policy may terminate once total debt, including interest, equals or exceeds the loan value.

Tax treatment of loans and withdrawals depends on the policy and your situation, and exceptions apply. Do not assume a loan carries no tax effect or no effect on the death benefit.

Cash value should not be treated as a ready reserve, because loans and withdrawals can shrink both values. Ask how a loan would affect your death benefit before you take one.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. That rigidity is a downside for some buyers and not a concern for others.

Adding coverage, converting the policy, or adding a rider depends on insurability and the insurer’s approval at that time. None of these is assured.

A fixed death benefit may not match a change in your life. Examples include a new business partner, a shift in an estate plan, or a change in family size. This matters for buy-sell and key person needs, where coverage is tied to a business obligation that can change. Changes can also raise questions about ownership and beneficiaries, so review those designations when your situation changes.

Contact NR CPAs & Business Advisors to ask what changes the contract allows and what each would require. Weigh flexibility against your own plans. A policy that fits a stable situation may not fit a changing one.

A level death benefit may lose buying power as prices rise

A level death benefit does not rise with inflation, so its buying power may shrink over the years. A level amount may fit some needs and not others.

Some buyers consider riders or periodic reviews to address this. Whether a rider is available, and what it costs, depends on the insurer and the policy. Any increase may depend on insurability at the time.

Coverage needs are personal. Rules of thumb exist, such as a multiple of income, but they are only starting points. The right amount depends on what you are protecting, such as a mortgage, a business loan, or a buy-sell obligation.

Age and circumstances can change both the cost of coverage and the amount you may need. Ask how the death benefit would look in later years, using the policy’s own table. Review the amount whenever your debts, partners, or family duties change. A rule of thumb cannot replace a review of your own facts.

Illustrations are projections, and tax treatment depends on the contract

An illustration is a projection, not a promise. It shows how a policy might perform under stated assumptions. Ask which assumptions were used.

Show guaranteed and non-guaranteed values side by side. Give both the same weight when you read them. If an illustration uses dividends, dividends are not guaranteed, and the values may come in lower.

Florida law prohibits knowingly making any illustration or sales presentation that misrepresents the benefits, advantages, conditions, or terms of an insurance policy, according to Fla.
