The main limits are that coverage ends when the term ends, renewal and conversion may cost more or be limited, premiums depend on age, health and the insurer, and term policies generally don’t build cash value. None of these limits is a verdict. Each one depends on the specific policy, the insurer, and your timeline.

This guide explains each limit in plain words. It is written for adults comparing options for their own household, for a family member, or for a business. It is general information, not tax or financial advice. NR CPAs & Business Advisors is a Miami CPA firm. Life insurance, including term and whole life, is offered through Nischay Rawal, a licensed insurance agent, separately from the accounting practice of NR CPAs & Business Advisors.

What term life insurance is, in plain words

Term life insurance pays a death benefit only if the insured person dies during a set period, called the term.

The death benefit is the amount the insurer pays to the named beneficiary if a covered death happens during the term. Payment depends on the policy’s terms and the insurer’s review. Many term policies also have a level-premium period, when the premium is set to stay the same. How long that period lasts depends on the specific policy and contract, so check the contract itself.

FINRA guidance on insurance explains that term coverage lasts for a limited period. Whole life is designed to last for life and includes a cash-value feature. Neither type is right for every household.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

Coverage ends when the term ends

The downsides of term life insurance start with timing. Coverage stops when the term ends, unless the policy is renewed or converted under its terms.

If the insured person is still living at the end of a 20-year term, the policy generally pays nothing. That is the basic trade-off of term coverage. Many families buy term to cover a mortgage, school years, or a business loan. Those obligations can last longer than the term you chose.

Before you pick a length, list the obligations the death benefit would need to cover. Note how long each one lasts. Then compare that list with the term you’re considering. Whether a policy can be renewed, and on what terms, depends on the insurer and the policy.

Renewal and conversion can cost more or be limited

After the level-premium period ends, premiums may rise substantially. Conversion options may also be limited.

Some term policies include a conversion option. It may allow a change to a permanent policy, and in some contracts it may not require a new underwriting review. That is only true if the contract includes the option and the conversion happens within its stated terms. The deadline, the new premium, and the new policy’s terms depend on the insurer and the contract.

Don’t assume a future switch will be available. Read the conversion section of the policy document, and confirm the exact deadline in writing before you rely on it.

Premiums depend on age, health and the insurer

Term premiums depend on the insurer, the policy, underwriting, and your circumstances, including age and health.

Term is often priced below cash-value policies. Colorado DORA life insurance information notes that term is typically less expensive, because cash-value premiums also fund the policy’s cash value. Your actual premium is still set by each insurer and cannot be assumed from a general rule.

Age and health can change what you pay and what is available later. Most individual life policies are fully underwritten, so health questions are required, and issue may depend on insurability. If an insured’s age was misstated, Fla. Stat. § 627.456 provides that the benefit is what the premium would have bought at the correct age.

Florida also requires that a policy become incontestable after two years from its date of issue, with listed exceptions. See Fla. Stat. § 627.455. Premiums are also due on schedule. Fla. That value consists of guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts. Dividends, where a policy pays them, are not guaranteed. Cash value depends on the insurer and the contract. It is not an investment account.

Loan rules differ by policy type. Florida’s policy loan provision does not apply to term policies or to term benefits provided by riders, according to Fla. Stat. § 627.458. For a whole life policy, a loan can reduce both the cash value and the death benefit. Loan terms depend on the policy.

Why the age and the term question matter

The right term length depends on what you need to protect, not on a single age or formula.

A 30-year term ends after 30 years. Whether you can renew, convert, or buy new coverage then depends on your health, the insurer’s rules, and the policy. Coverage bought later in life can cost more, and it may be harder to get.

Some people use a multiple-of-income rule of thumb as a rough starting point. It is not a definitive answer. It does not account for your debts, assets, dependents, or goals. Age can also change the premium for a new policy, but the amount depends on the insurer, the policy, and underwriting.

Business and cross-border considerations

Term coverage used for key person or buy-sell purposes raises ownership, insurable-interest, and tax questions. The answers depend on the facts.

Under Fla. Stat. § 627.404, a business entity may insure a key owner or key person only if written consent is obtained before the insurance is bought. The business may not retaliate against someone who refuses consent.

Federal rules are also detailed. Under IRC § 101, proceeds of life insurance contracts payable by reason of death may be excluded from gross income, but the statute contains exceptions, including limits on transfers made for a valuable consideration, and tax treatment depends on the policy and the individual’s circumstances. Under IRC § 2042, insurance receivable by the executor is included in the gross estate, and insurance receivable by other beneficiaries is included to the extent the decedent possessed incidents of ownership in the policy at death; whether this applies depends on the policy and the individual’s circumstances. Whether premiums are deductible depends on the policy, the business structure, and the individual’s particular situation.

Insurance is offered through Nischay Rawal, a Florida-licensed insurance agent, separately from the accounting practice of NR CPAs & Business Advisors. Florida requires agents to make clear they act as insurance agents.

Weighing the downsides for your situation

To weigh the downsides of term life insurance, match the term length to real obligations. Then check renewal, conversion, and premium terms in writing.

Use this checklist before you decide:

How long each debt or dependent need will last.

When the level-premium period ends, and what the premium may become.

Whether the contract has a conversion option, and its deadline.

How health questions and underwriting could affect later coverage.

Whether you need cash value, which points toward whole life, and what is guaranteed versus non-guaranteed.

For business coverage, who owns the policy, who is the beneficiary, and what written consents exist.

Is term life insurance worth it?

Term life insurance can fit a defined need with an end date.
