It is a rough rule of thumb that suggests a death benefit of about ten times your annual income. It is a starting point for thinking about coverage, not a coverage answer. This guide explains what the rule says, what it leaves out, and how a coverage review with NR CPAs & Business Advisors can test it against your own numbers.

What Is the 10X Rule for Life Insurance?

The 10X rule is a shortcut: multiply your yearly income by ten to get a first, rough coverage figure. People like it because it’s easy to remember. That ease is part of its appeal, but it’s still a rough shortcut. It is one of several rough estimates. Some people use a range of income multiples. Others use a needs-based worksheet, such as the DIME method, which adds up debts, income, mortgage and education costs. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide covers how much coverage to buy and the questions to ask before you buy. Because the 10X rule uses only income, it ignores almost everything else in a household’s finances. Treat ten times income as a starting point. It is not a recommended or sufficient amount for any particular household.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

Why the 10X Rule Is Only a Starting Point

The 10X rule is only a starting point because it uses one number, income. It doesn’t look at what the coverage must actually handle. The right amount depends on what needs protecting, such as:

Debts, like a mortgage, car loans, or a business loan

Income replacement for a spouse, partner, or dependents, and for how long

Education and childcare costs

Final expenses and estate settlement costs

Business obligations, such as a buy-out or a loan a company relies on

Coverage you already have through an employer, a personal policy, or savings

Age and health matter too. Two applicants with the same income may need different amounts, and the cost of coverage can change with age. A household with two incomes may need a different working figure than a single earner with the same salary. A spouse’s income or savings can also narrow the gap. Premiums and underwriting results depend on the insurer, the policy, and the applicant’s circumstances. No single figure fits every household.

How to Use the 10X Rule as a Rough Starting Point

You can use the 10X rule as a quick first step, then test the result against your own numbers. Follow these steps:

Write down your annual income, or the income your household depends on.

Multiply that income by ten. This gives an illustrative working figure only.

List what the coverage would need to handle, such as debts, dependents’ needs, final expenses, and business obligations.

Subtract existing coverage, savings, and other resources. Any remaining gap is what to review.

Bring the working figure and your list to a coverage review, where it can be tested against your situation.

Keep the working figure loosely held. Income changes, new debts, and new children can change the answer. Revisit the math when your life changes. The insurer’s underwriting decides what it will actually issue.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. The 10X rule is a guide to how much coverage to consider. 10-pay describes a whole life policy’s premium schedule, usually over about ten years.

A 10-pay schedule can change the premium period, the cost pattern, and the cash value pattern. Actual amounts depend on the insurer, the contract, and underwriting.

Whole life insurance may build cash value under the contract. That cash value includes guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts. Dividends, where a policy offers them, are not guaranteed. Dividends are not guaranteed.

Loans and withdrawals can reduce both cash value and the death benefit. Florida law lets an insurer advance a policy loan, up to the policy’s loan value, once the policy has cash surrender value and no premium is in default (Fla. Stat. § 627.458). Loan terms depend on the policy. Federal rules also look at premium pace. A policy that fails the 7-pay test is treated as a modified endowment contract. Treatment depends on the contract and your situation.

How a Coverage Review With NR CPAs Works

A coverage review is our first meeting, and we look at your numbers before any policy is chosen.
