It is designed to stay in force for the insured’s lifetime, as long as the policy’s premium terms are met. Whole life insurance Miami families and business owners ask about usually comes down to a few questions: how it works, how long it lasts, what affects cost, and how cash value fits in. This guide answers each one in plain words.

What Whole Life Insurance Is, in Plain Words

Whole life insurance is permanent life insurance that pays a death benefit and may build cash value under the contract. The death benefit is the amount the insurer pays to your named beneficiaries, subject to the policy terms and the insurer’s review. Cash value is a feature of the contract, not a separate account. It may build over time, and it includes guaranteed amounts and non-guaranteed amounts. The non-guaranteed amounts depend on the insurer and the policy design. Some whole life policies pay dividends, and dividends are not guaranteed. Whole life is life insurance. It is not a savings account, an investment, or a retirement plan.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

How Long Whole Life Coverage Lasts

Whole life coverage is designed to last for life, as long as premiums are paid as the contract requires. The contract sets the rules, so the specific policy and insurer decide the details. Florida law requires every insurance contract to allow a grace period of at least 30 days after the first premium, and the insurer may charge interest for those days. The Fla. Stat. § 627.453 rule keeps the policy in force during that window. After the grace period, coverage can lapse if premiums or loan repayments are not handled as the policy describes. Florida law also says a policy generally becomes incontestable after 2 years from its issue date, with exceptions, including nonpayment of premiums, as set out in Fla. Stat. § 627.455. Because these points depend on policy language, the details of any contract should be confirmed in a coverage review.

Whole Life or Term: How the Two Compare

Term life insurance covers a set period, while whole life insurance is designed to last for life. Neither one is better for every household. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide explains the difference between term and permanent coverage and the questions to ask before buying. The right structure depends on what you are protecting, such as household income, a mortgage, personal debts, or obligations tied to a business. Some people use a rule of thumb, such as a multiple of annual income, as a rough starting point. That number is not the amount your household needs. Your age, existing coverage, and goals can change both the cost and the amount that fits. Bring any policies you already own, because they affect what you still need.

What Affects the Cost of Whole Life Insurance

The cost of whole life insurance depends on the insurer, the policy, underwriting, the face amount, and the insured’s age and health. For whole life insurance Miami buyers, cost questions start with the policy itself. No single monthly figure applies to every buyer. Any number shown in an illustration or article is only an example. Premium terms can be level for a stated period under the contract, and that period depends on the specific policy. Health questions are required for a fully underwritten policy, and issuance depends on insurability.

Premium deductibility is a separate question. Under federal law, premiums on a life insurance policy are generally not deductible when the taxpayer is directly or indirectly a beneficiary under the policy. That can matter for business-owned coverage. As a general rule, Internal Revenue Code section 264 provides that no deduction shall be allowed for premiums on any life insurance policy, or endowment or annuity contract, if the taxpayer is directly or indirectly a beneficiary under the policy or contract. How it applies depends on the policy and your situation. This is general information, not tax advice. Treatment depends on the policy, the business structure, and your situation.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. Loans and withdrawals reduce cash value, and a policy loan can also reduce the death benefit. So cash value is not an emergency fund. Florida law provides that, once a policy has a cash surrender value and no premium is in default, the insurer will advance a loan on proper assignment or pledge of the policy. The loan value is generally at least equal to the cash surrender value at the end of the current policy year, less certain deductions. See Fla. Stat. § 627.458. That statute also allows a policy to end, after at least 30 days’ notice, if loan debt equals or exceeds loan value, when the policy contains that provision. Loan terms and interest depend on the policy. Tax treatment of cash value, loans, and withdrawals also depends on the policy and your situation. Don’t treat cash value as a tax-deferred account without checking your own contract.

Estate Planning and Business Considerations for Miami Owners

Life insurance can play a part in estate and business planning, but the tax results depend on the policy, who owns it, and the rules that apply. Under federal law, life insurance death benefits are generally excluded from gross income, but exceptions apply. As a general rule in Internal Revenue Code section 101, except as otherwise provided in paragraphs (2) and (3), subsection (d), subsection (f), and subsection (j), gross income does not include amounts received (whether in a single sum or otherwise) under a life insurance contract, if such amounts are paid by reason of the death of the insured. Because those exceptions exist, treatment depends on the policy and your situation. This is general information, not tax advice. Separately, the gross estate can include life insurance proceeds if the decedent held incidents of ownership in the policy at death. Internal Revenue Code section 2042 provides that the value of the gross estate shall include the value of all property to the extent of the amount receivable by the executor as insurance under policies on the life of the decedent. It also includes amounts receivable by all other beneficiaries as insurance under policies on the decedent’s life with respect to which the decedent possessed at death any of the incidents of ownership. Whether this applies depends on the policy, its ownership and your situation. This is general information, not tax advice. Ownership is a key question for estate planning.

Key person insurance and buy-sell agreement insurance are separate policy types. Key person coverage can help a business plan for the loss of an owner or key employee. Buy-sell coverage can help fund an agreed purchase of an owner’s interest. Both depend on the policy, underwriting, and the business agreement. Some buyers or investors may consider coverage as one factor when looking at a business, but that is not a guaranteed effect.

For context, IRS guidance sets the basic exclusion amount for estate and gift tax at $15,000,000 for 2026. That figure alone does not decide whether any estate owes tax. See IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32. This section is general information, not tax or legal advice.

Start a Whole Life Coverage Review in Miami

A coverage review is the first meeting with NR CPAs & Business Advisors.
