This page explains what shapes the price. It then covers two cost-related events every policyholder should understand: a missed premium and a policy loan. This is general information, not tax or financial advice, and it quotes no premium figures.

Why there is no single answer to how much life insurance costs

Life insurance has no single price because each insurer sets premiums using its own rules and the applicant’s details. Two people asking for the same death benefit can receive different premiums from the same insurer. Insurers review each applicant through underwriting, the process of judging risk based on health, age, and other factors. Premium terms also depend on the specific policy and contract. A figure that fits someone else’s situation tells you little about yours. The more useful question is what your policy requires, and what happens if a payment is missed or money is borrowed against it. Those answers come from the contract itself.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

What drives the premium a person is quoted

Age, health, coverage amount, and policy type are the main factors insurers commonly weigh. Insurers often look at age at issue, health history, tobacco use, the death benefit requested, and whether the policy is term or whole life. We don’t state that one type costs more or less than another. That comparison depends on the insurer, the policy, and the applicant’s facts. Age and health can change what an insurer offers, so timing can matter. Riders, which are optional add-ons to a base policy, can change both the amount and the schedule of payments. The payment mode matters too. Paying monthly, quarterly, or annually can change the total paid over a year. Whether a level premium period applies, and how long it lasts, is set by the specific policy and contract. Read that section of your own paperwork rather than relying on a general summary.

How a rule of thumb can serve as a starting point for coverage

A common rule of thumb measures coverage as a multiple of annual income. Treat it as a starting point, not a definitive answer. The fit of any multiple depends on what the policy must protect. That might be a mortgage, a business loan, a buy-sell obligation, or a family’s income for some years. A checklist of debts, income, and final expenses can help you organize those needs. It still doesn’t produce one correct amount. Needs change with age and with life events, such as a new child, a home purchase, or a change in a business. Those same changes can also affect the cost and the amount an insurer will offer. The NAIC’s Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide explains how much coverage to buy and what to ask before buying.

What the grace period means when a premium is missed

A grace period is extra time after a premium due date to pay before the policy can end. Florida law sets a floor. Premium payment terms, including any grace period for a premium after the first, are set out in each policy contract and depend on the insurer and the specific policy. The insurer may charge interest on the late premium, not more than 8% per year, for the days of grace that pass. If a claim occurs during the grace period before the overdue premium is paid, the unpaid premium and interest may be deducted from the settlement. Older policyholders have an added safeguard. For a person 64 or older whose policy has been in force at least one year, the insurer may not lapse the policy for nonpayment without first mailing a notice at least 21 days before the lapse. The owner may also name a secondary addressee (Fla. Stat. § 627.4555). That notice rule does not apply to premiums paid monthly or more often that a licensed agent collects, or that are paid by credit card or automatic debit. Whether your policy continues depends on its terms and on the payment being made in time.

Nonpayment provisions and their possible effect on cash value and death benefit

When premiums stop, the contract’s nonpayment provisions decide what happens next. These provisions vary by policy and insurer. Some contracts may use available cash value to keep some coverage in force. Others may end coverage. Your contract sets which rule applies, so read it before a payment is missed. Cash value consists of guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts. The guaranteed amounts are stated in the contract. The non-guaranteed amounts depend on the insurer’s results and the policy’s terms. A whole life policy may build cash value under its contract, but that growth is not guaranteed. Any reduction in cash value or death benefit after nonpayment depends on the contract and the insurer. Dividends, where a policy pays them, are not guaranteed. Treat any projection you receive as an illustration with limits, not a promise.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. Florida law includes a policy loan provision. After the policy has a cash surrender value and no premium is in default, the insurer may make a policy loan up to the loan value. The cash value consists of guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts, and loans may reduce both the cash value and the death benefit; loan terms depend on the policy. Florida law addresses policy loans, including loans up to the loan value once there is a cash surrender value (Fla. Stat. § 627.458). The insurer may deduct existing debt, unpaid premium for the current policy year, and interest. Unpaid loan interest can be added to the debt and bear interest. If total debt equals or exceeds the loan value, the policy may terminate, but only after at least 30 days’ notice is mailed. That loan provision does not apply to term policies or term riders. Cash value is also not an emergency fund. Borrowing can leave your family with less protection than you planned. The Florida Department of Financial Services consumer guide to life insurance covers cash value and policy loans in plain terms. Federal tax treatment depends on the policy and your situation. Amounts paid because of the insured’s death are generally excluded from gross income, but listed exceptions apply, and tax treatment depends on the policy and the individual’s circumstances. Interest paid on proceeds held by the insurer can be taxable. Loans and withdrawals can also have tax effects that depend on the facts.

How a coverage review can check your premium and loan terms

A coverage review is our first meeting with you about a policy. We walk through the premium schedule, the grace period, the nonpayment provisions, and any loan terms in your contract. Bring the policy contract, the latest annual statement, and any notices about premiums, lapse, or loans. If your policy includes an illustration, read it with its limits in view. An illustration shows possible values, not promised ones. Read the guaranteed and non-guaranteed figures side by side. Our review focuses on your policy and your situation. We don’t compare your policy against other insurers’ illustrations or premiums. We also can’t predict how a future premium or value will change, because that depends on the insurer and the contract.

Next step: talk with NR CPAs & Business Advisors about your policy

If you’ve missed a premium or are weighing a loan, you may wonder whether the policy is still in force. You may also wonder whether borrowing would shrink the death benefit your family is counting on.
