How long do you need coverage? And do you want a policy that may also build cash value? Term life insurance pays a death benefit only if the insured dies during a set period. Whole life insurance is permanent coverage that may build cash value under the contract.

This page explains both types in plain words. It also covers questions that come up when a beneficiary, premium payer or family member lives outside the United States. This is general information. The right policy depends on your situation.

What Term and Whole Life Insurance Are, and Who Each May Suit

Term life insurance covers you for a set period, such as 10, 20 or 30 years, depending on the policy. If the insured dies during that term, the insurer pays the death benefit, subject to the policy terms. When the term ends, coverage ends unless the policy allows renewal or conversion.

Whole life insurance is permanent. It is designed to stay in force while premiums are paid under the contract. It may also build cash value. That value includes guaranteed and non-guaranteed amounts, so the result is never assured.

Term often fits a need with an end date, such as a loan you will repay or a business agreement with a set length. Whole life may fit a need that lasts longer, such as lifelong dependents, estate planning or a buy-sell arrangement that runs for many years.

No single type suits every household. Age, health, income and what you are protecting all change the answer. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide covers term and permanent coverage and the questions to ask before buying.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

Key Differences in Duration, Premiums and Cash Value

Whole life versus term life insurance differs most in how long coverage lasts, how premiums work, and whether cash value can build.

Duration: Term coverage ends when its term ends. Whole life is designed to remain in force while premiums are paid under the contract.

Premiums: Premium amounts depend on the insurer, the policy, underwriting and your circumstances. Term premiums are often lower than whole life premiums, but your figures may differ. A term premium stays level only for the level-premium period stated in your specific contract.

Cash value: Whole life may build cash value. Loans or withdrawals can reduce both the cash value and the death benefit. Florida law says a policy loan provision applies only after a policy has a cash surrender value and no premium is in default. It does not apply to term policies (Fla. Stat. 627.458). Terms depend on the policy.

Dividends: Where a policy offers dividends, they are not guaranteed.

Illustrations: An illustration shows possible values under stated assumptions. Read it alongside the guaranteed figures, the policy terms and its limits. We walk through this in a coverage review.

Naming Beneficiaries and Premium Payers Abroad

A US policy may name a beneficiary who lives in India. Whether an insurer accepts that arrangement depends on its requirements and the policy. Start by sorting out four roles.

Owner: the person who controls the policy and can make changes.

Insured: the person whose life is covered.

Beneficiary: the person who receives the death benefit.

Premium payer: the person or account that sends the payments.

These roles can belong to the same person or to different people. A US resident may own the policy and pay premiums while a parent abroad is the beneficiary. The roles should match the goal of the coverage.

Florida law sets insurable interest rules. A person may insure his or her own life for anyone’s benefit. A contract on another person’s life generally requires that benefits be payable to that person or to someone with an insurable interest when the contract is made (Fla. Stat. 627.404). Business arrangements, such as key person coverage, also need written consent from the key person before the insurance is bought.

Payment of a death benefit to a beneficiary abroad depends on insurer review, underwriting and the policy terms. Payment is not a certainty. Treat this section as general information. Your specific case gets checked in a coverage review.

Paying Premiums From Abroad and Documents an Insurer May Request

Premiums paid from an account outside the United States must go through the insurer’s approved payment methods. Those methods vary by insurer, so confirm them before you apply.

Insurers may ask for records such as:

Identity documents for the owner, insured and premium payer

Proof of residence

The source of the funds used for premiums

The currency and payment method for each premium

This list is a guide to what to ask about. It is not a rule for any insurer. Each insurer sets its own requirements, and those requirements can change.

Currency matters too. Whether premiums and benefits are stated in US dollars, and how exchange rates affect the amount you send, depends on the policy and the payment method. Ask the insurer to confirm those terms in writing.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. NR CPAs & Business Advisors is a CPA firm. Insurance is offered by a licensed insurance agent, separately from the accounting practice.

Under Internal Revenue Code § 101, gross income does not include amounts received under a life insurance contract if the amounts are paid by reason of the insured’s death. Exceptions apply, and tax treatment depends on the policy and the individual’s circumstances (IRC § 101). Interest on proceeds the insurer holds is addressed separately in IRS guidance on life insurance proceeds.

Proceeds may be included in the gross estate in some cases. Under Internal Revenue Code § 2042, insurance receivable by the executor, and insurance receivable by other beneficiaries where the decedent held incidents of ownership at death, may be included in the gross estate, depending on the policy and the individual’s circumstances (IRC § 2042). Who owns the policy matters.

Premium deductions can be limited. Under Internal Revenue Code § 264, no deduction is allowed for premiums on a life insurance policy if the taxpayer is directly or indirectly a beneficiary under the policy. Other limits in the section also apply, and deductibility depends on the policy, the business structure and the individual’s circumstances (IRC § 264). For business owners, the business structure affects the answer.

Reporting duties for accounts, payments and beneficiaries can depend on your residence and situation. We raise these questions alongside the policy design in a coverage review.

This section is general information, not tax advice.

Common Questions About Whole Life Versus Term Life Insurance
<details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Does term life insurance cover me for life?

No. Term coverage lasts for the stated term.
