Health questions are required, and issue may depend on insurability.

Death benefit and payment period. A larger death benefit or a shorter payment period raises the premium.

Riders and policy features. Added features change the cost, so read what each one covers.

Accurate application answers matter. Florida law says that if age or sex was misstated, the benefit is what the premium would have bought at the correct age or sex, using the insurer’s rate at the date of issue (Fla. Stat. § 627.456). Giving correct information at the start avoids surprises later.

Why does whole life cost more than term life?

Whole life costs more because its premium also funds cash value. Term life covers a set period and does not build cash value.

The Colorado life insurance guide notes that term life is typically less expensive than cash-value policies. Cash-value premiums cover the death benefit and also fund the cash value.

The FINRA insurance guide explains that term coverage lasts a limited period. Whole life provides lifetime coverage and includes a cash-value feature.

When you compare costs, compare the same death benefit and the same length of coverage. A lower premium for a shorter term is not the same product.

How does cash value affect the cost?

Cash value is the part of a whole life policy that can be borrowed against or cashed out. The South Carolina Department of Insurance explains that term policies do not build cash value, while permanent and whole life policies do.

Florida law sets rules for policy loans. After a policy has a cash surrender value and no premium is in default, the insurer will advance a loan on the policy, though it may defer a loan (other than one to pay a premium) for up to 6 months after you apply. The loan value must be at least equal to the cash surrender value at the end of the current policy year, minus listed deductions (Fla. Stat. § 627.458). Fla. Stat. § 627.458 reads: “The loan value of the policy shall be at least equal to the cash surrender value at the end of the then-current policy year, except that the insurer may deduct, either from such loan value or from the proceeds of the loan, any existing indebtedness not already deducted in determining such cash surrender value, including any interest then accrued but not due, any unpaid balance of the premium for the current policy year, and interest on the loan to the end of the current policy year.” That same section does not apply to term policies.

Any unpaid loan and interest reduces what your family receives. Plan loans with that in mind.

What happens if a premium is late?

Florida law requires a grace period of at least 30 days to pay a premium after the first one. The policy stays in force during that time. The insurer may charge interest of up to 8 percent per year on the late payment (Fla. Stat. § 627.455, a policy must become incontestable after it has been in force during the insured’s lifetime for 2 years from its date of issue. In plain words, after that point the insurer generally cannot challenge the policy’s validity, for example over statements made in the application. Under IRC § 2042, the gross estate includes the amount receivable by other beneficiaries as insurance under policies on the decedent’s life, to the extent the decedent possessed at death any incidents of ownership in those policies, alone or together with another person. IRC § 2042 reads: “For purposes of the preceding sentence, the term “incident of ownership” includes a reversionary interest (whether arising by the express terms of the policy or other instrument or by operation of law) only if the value of such reversionary interest exceeded 5 percent of the value of the policy immediately before the death of the decedent.”

Estate inclusion is a separate question from income tax. Who owns the policy often matters more than the premium.

IRS guidance discusses the federal estate tax exclusion. Under IRC § 2010(c)(3)(A), the basic exclusion amount is $15,000,000, and under § 2010(c)(3)(B), the dollar amount is increased by an inflation adjustment for any decedent dying in a calendar year after 2026. The IRS gift tax FAQ lists the annual gift tax exclusion at $19,000 per donee.

Do ownership and beneficiary choices change the cost?

Ownership and beneficiary choices shape cash flow and the estate result. Who pays the premium, who owns the policy, and who receives the benefit each matter.

These choices do not change the base premium in the same way as age or health. They do change how the proceeds fit into your estate plan. Review them with your advisors before you sign.

How do business owners and NRI buyers think about cost?

Business owners often buy whole life for key person or buy-sell purposes. Non-resident Indian buyers may also seek NRI life insurance. The cost questions are the same: age, health, policy design, and insurer.

The ownership structure and the business agreement matter just as much.
