In plain words, that means you live in the United States permanently, and you’re not a U.S. citizen.

Insurers set their own rules for non-citizen applicants. Two companies can treat the same status in different ways. Don’t assume every insurer treats a green card holder the same as a U.S. citizen, or the same as a temporary visa holder.

Your status is one piece of the file. The insurer also looks at your health history, age, residency, and the policy you choose.

Documents and identification an insurer may ask for

Insurers often ask for proof of identity and status. Common items include your green card, a valid government photo ID, proof of address, and a Social Security number (SSN) or an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN), where the insurer requires one.

Requirements vary by insurer and policy, and they can change. The insurer’s requirements control the application. Some insurers accept an ITIN and others don’t, so acceptance depends on the company.

The application also asks about residency and citizenship status. Answer every question accurately. Under Florida law, a life policy becomes incontestable only after it has been in force during the insured’s lifetime for 2 years from its issue date. The statute lists exceptions, such as nonpayment of premiums and provisions for disability and accidental-death benefits. Wrong answers can still cause problems, so take your time.

Age matters too. Under Florida law, if the insured’s age is misstated, the benefit is what the premium would have bought at the correct age, based on the insurer’s rate at issue (Fla. Stat. 627.456).

How underwriting works for non-citizen applicants

Underwriting is the insurer’s review of your application. The insurer uses it to decide whether to issue a policy, and at what rate class and premium.

A fully underwritten term application asks health questions. Issue, rate class, and premium may depend on your insurability. Don’t assume that any product skips the health questions.

Your residence outside the United States can also affect which insurers and policies are available to you. That varies by company. Don’t assume a particular age or status produces a specific cost difference. Premiums depend on the insurer, the policy, underwriting, and your circumstances.

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly. Premiums may stay level only for the level-premium period stated in your specific policy and contract. After that period, the premium, renewability, and any age-based change depend on the policy.

Florida law requires every insurance contract to give at least a 30-day grace period to pay a premium after the first (Fla. Stat. 627.453). The contract may charge interest for that period, so check your policy’s terms.

Some people look at a rule of thumb for how much coverage to buy. One common version is about 10 times annual income. Treat it only as a rough starting point, not a definitive answer. The right amount depends on what your household needs to protect. The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide explains how to think through coverage and costs. For the coverage-amount discussion, see how much term life insurance do I need.

When a green card is pending, or you live abroad

If your green card is still pending, or you spend time outside the United States, insurer rules on residency, pending status, and documents vary. Don’t assume a pending status will or won’t affect approval.

If a relative abroad is involved, read the non-resident guide before you decide. See term life insurance for NRIs in the USA.

Two terms come up often. A beneficiary is the person who receives the death benefit. An insurable interest is the legal relationship that lets someone buy coverage on another person’s life. Whether a buyer has an insurable interest in the person to be insured, and whether that person’s written consent is needed, depends on the circumstances and is addressed during the insurer’s application process.

Frequently asked questions
<details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Do green card holders need a Social Security number to apply?

Not always.
