Full life insurance, usually called whole life, is designed to cover you for your whole life and includes a cash-value feature. For many early-career earners with a mortgage, student loans or dependents, term is the lower-cost starting point. The right answer still depends on the facts.

This guide explains the difference in plain words. It also covers Florida policy rules and federal tax basics you should know before you buy.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — we can walk you through how a situation like yours is usually handled and what your options are.

Schedule a coverage review

Schedule a coverage review

Full life insurance vs term: what is the basic difference?

Term life insurance pays a death benefit only if the insured dies during the policy’s term. Full life insurance is a permanent policy that is designed to last for life.

Term life: coverage lasts for a limited period you choose. It does not include a cash-value feature.

Full (whole) life: coverage is designed to last for life. It includes a cash-value feature that builds inside the policy.

The FINRA insurance products guide describes this split between limited-period coverage and lifetime coverage with a cash-value feature.

How do the costs compare for someone in their late twenties or thirties?

Term life is typically less expensive than cash-value policies at the start. The Colorado DORA life insurance overview explains the reason. Whole and other cash-value premiums also fund the policy’s cash value, so the premium is higher for the same death benefit.

For a young household, that gap matters. A larger premium competes with rent, student loans and retirement saving. The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance life insurance guide compares term and permanent policies on the same points: coverage length, death benefit, cash value and typical premium differences.

Read the policy for two things. First, find how long the premium stays the same. Second, find what changes when the term ends.

Which coverage fits a young professional’s life stage?

Your reasons for coverage often shift over time. Early on, the main need is usually protection for people who rely on your income.

Mortgage and student loans

If a surviving spouse or partner would need money to cover a mortgage or loans, a death benefit can help. Term coverage can match the years when those debts are largest.

Children or a spouse who depends on your income

Young families often need coverage that lasts while children are young and a household runs on one or two incomes. Ask how many years of income your family would need, not just a round number.

Permanent coverage later

Some people want coverage that lasts for life. A coverage review can compare both paths as your income, debts and family change.

What Florida policy rules should a young buyer know?

Florida sets minimum rules that every insurance contract must follow. Three of them matter most for a new policy.

Two-year contestability. Florida law provides that a life insurance policy becomes incontestable once it has been in force during the lifetime of the insured for 2 years from its date of issue. Fla. Stat. § 627.4615 requires that lump-sum death proceeds include interest at a rate at least equal to the Moody’s Corporate Bond Yield Average-Monthly Average Corporate as of the day the claim was received.

What tax basics should a CPA check with you?

Life insurance tax rules depend on who owns the policy and who receives the money. Here are the main federal points.

Federal law says that, except as otherwise provided in paragraphs (2) and (3), subsection (d), subsection (f), and subsection (j), gross income does not include amounts received under a life insurance contract paid because of the insured’s death. Under IRC § 101, the amount excluded from gross income on a transfer for valuable consideration of a life insurance contract cannot exceed the actual value of that consideration plus the premiums and other amounts later paid by the transferee, subject to the listed exceptions.

Estate inclusion. Life insurance proceeds receivable by the executor are included in the gross estate. Proceeds receivable by other beneficiaries can be included if the decedent held incidents of ownership at death. Under IRC § 2042, the value of the gross estate includes insurance receivable by the executor, and insurance receivable by other beneficiaries to the extent of the amount where the decedent held incidents of ownership, exercisable alone or with another person, in the policy. IRC § 2042 reads: “For purposes of the preceding sentence, the term “incident of ownership” includes a reversionary interest (whether arising by the express terms of the policy or other instrument or by operation of law) only if the value of such reversionary interest exceeded 5 percent of the value of the policy immediately before the death of the decedent.”

Have questions about what happened?

Ask our team directly.
